文中的opening game就是指“揭幕戰(zhàn)”，也寫作opening match，opening在這里就表示“開幕”，例如我們常說的opening ceremony（開幕式）、opening remarks（開幕辭）。與之相對(duì)的則是closing ceremony（閉幕式）、closing remarks（閉幕辭）。引申開來，opening可以泛指戲劇、演出的“首場(chǎng)”，例如opening night（首夜演出、放映）。
Opening在商業(yè)活動(dòng)中還可以表示“開業(yè)”。商店、銀行等的“營(yíng)業(yè)時(shí)間”就是opening hours，酒館的法定開始營(yíng)業(yè)時(shí)間被稱為opening time，股票在每天開盤、收盤時(shí)都會(huì)確定opening price（開盤價(jià)）和closing price（收盤價(jià)）。
