Handbags are no longer seen as a female-only accessory after a survey found men are choosing to carry around a "man bag", often containing contents worth £900.
They are seen on the arms of David Beckham and Kanye West, often viewed as an example of the ‘metrosexual man.’
But now more men are adopting the handbag, and are using them to carry around almost £1,000 worth of ‘essentials.’
Men are catching up with women, who now transport around £1,209 worth of items, as they adopt ‘man bags’ to make a fashion statement or keep their wallets safe.
The average ‘man bag’ contains items worth around £880, a survey has revealed. The main items men carry are smartphones, laptops, tablets, glasses and digital cameras. Some also decide to pack a toothbrush, aftershave and even spare underwear.
The survey revealed more than half of men now carry around a bag and two thirds are concerned about security and carry their wallet safely in a bag rather than their pocket.
One in nine (11 percent) said having a bag is more of a fashion statement, while one in 14 (seven percent) started carrying a bag because their partner complained about being asked to carry extra items in their already over-laden handbags.
The survey of 2,000 men revealed one in ten percent pack spare underwear in their bags.
Anita Naik, consumer editor of Vouchercodes.co.uk, who carried out the survey, said: "The research shows men are starting to embrace the manbag and recognise the practical benefits of carrying everything in one place, especially with expensive tech to carry around every day.”
The average contents of a woman’s handbag were recently found to cost £1,209.99 in a survey by John Lewis.
