 “降半旗”向遇難同胞致哀

2008年5月19日14時28分，在幅原遼闊的中華大地上，驟然響起了無數(shù)汽車、火車和艦船的長長鳴笛聲，一陣陣凄厲的防空警報聲也在各個城市拉響。人們都低頭肅立著，靜靜地為舉世震驚的汶川特大地震遇難者默哀3分鐘。此前，國務(wù)院已正式發(fā)出公告，宣布2008年5月19日至21日三天為全國哀悼日，全國和各駐外機構(gòu)下半旗志哀，停止公共娛樂活動。

Air raid sirens, and car, train and ship horns wailed and people stood for three minutes in silence yesterday to mourn the tens of thousands who died in last week's earthquake.
防空警報聲響起，汽車、火車和艦船笛聲哀鳴，人們肅立著為上周地震中的遇難者默哀3分鐘。
Flags were flyingat half-mast across the country and all public entertainment has been suspended as the three-day mourning period started. The Olympic torch relay is also suspended during the period.
在為期三天的全國哀悼日期間，全國各地降半旗致哀，停止各類公共娛樂活動。此間暫停奧運火炬?zhèn)鬟f。
上述報道中，stand in silence就是“起立默哀”的意思，at half-mast是“降半旗”的意思，用在句子里我們可以說：Flags are at half-mast. /Flags are flying at half-mast.
哀悼日期間，除了suspend public entertainment（停止公共娛樂活動），suspend the Olympic torch relay（暫停奧運火炬?zhèn)鬟f）以外，外交部和駐外使領(lǐng)館還設(shè)了“吊唁簿”（condolence books），“股票和期貨交易”（stocks and futures exchanges）19日下午14:28時“臨時停市3分鐘”（temporarily suspend trading for 3 minutes）。
