What is hygge? How the Danish lifestyle trend became a Word of the Year
分享到
近日,著名的柯林斯詞典公布了2016年度詞匯榜單,與名列第一的Brexit(脫歐)相比,位列榜單第三的更加博人眼球——一個(gè)大多數(shù)人不會(huì)念的丹麥詞“Hygge”。“Hygge”背后的含義到底是什么?它為何能在世界上再次掀起北歐風(fēng)潮?
Though the announcement political terms 'Brexit' and 'Trumpism' had been named by Collins English Dictionary as the words of the year may have been entirely expected, it was more surprising to see the term 'hygge' crop up on the list.
柯林斯英語大詞典將Brexit(英國脫歐)和Trumpism(特朗普主義)這兩個(gè)政治名詞列入年度熱詞行列完全在人們的意料之中,但hygge一詞的入榜就讓人有些意外了。
For those not familiar, 'hygge' refers to the Danish lifestyle craze that's seen something of an international hysteria of late; a concept roughly described as a feeling of comfort and contentment, as well as indulging in all the good things and people in your life.
對(duì)不熟悉這個(gè)詞的人來說,hygge是最近全世界對(duì)丹麥生活方式的一種狂熱追求,這一概念大致是指舒適和滿足的感覺,沉迷于生活中美好的人和事當(dāng)中。
It's one often connected to the idea that the Danes are the happiest people in the world, and that it's 'hygge' that provides the secret to their success.
它經(jīng)常讓人聯(lián)想到世界上最幸福的是丹麥人,而丹麥幸福的秘訣就是hygge。
The craze has focused largely on the idea of making the ordinary special, or meaningful, through ritualising everyday activities such as making a cup of coffee or having dinner; that means putting technology to one side, and embracing simple practices such as lighting candles, purchasing flowers, or brewing real tea in china cups.
對(duì)這種生活方式的追求很大程度上是將煮咖啡、吃晚餐等日?;顒?dòng)變成一種慣例和儀式,將普通的事變得特殊或有意義。也就是說,把復(fù)雜的技藝放在一邊,去做些簡單的事,比如點(diǎn)蠟燭、買花,或是用瓷杯泡杯正宗的茶。
Of course, Denmark's use of 'hygge' is particularly useful in combating the country's harsh winters; with up to 17 hours of darkness a day potentially having deeply adverse effects on the mental health of its citizens.
當(dāng)然,為了對(duì)抗嚴(yán)冬,丹麥人的hygge就尤其有用了:冬天,這個(gè)國家可是有接近17小時(shí)的黑夜,這很可能會(huì)對(duì)人們的心理健康造成極大的負(fù)面影響。
Susanne Nilsson, a Danish lecturer at London's Morley College, explained to the BBC; "We have long, cold winters in Denmark. That influences things. Hygge doesn't have to be a winter-only thing, but the weather isn't that good for much of the year."
倫敦莫利學(xué)院的丹麥講師蘇珊娜?尼爾森對(duì)BBC記者說:“丹麥的冬天又冷又長,所以對(duì)很多事有影響。Hygge不是冬天專有的現(xiàn)象,但是一年的很多時(shí)候天氣都不怎么好?!?/p>
"Hygge could be families and friends getting together for a meal, with the lighting dimmed, or it could be time spent on your own reading a good book," she adds.
“Hygge可以是家人朋友相聚吃飯,燈光微暗,也可以是自己花時(shí)間看一本有趣的書?!彼a(bǔ)充道。
"It works best when there's not too large an empty space around the person or people."
“如果人們周圍的空間不會(huì)大得離譜,那就是最好的hygge。”
The word hygge didn't actually originate from the Danish language, but from Norwegian; where the word originally meant something similar to, "well-being".
Hygge的詞源并不是丹麥語,而是挪威語,原本的含義與“幸?!焙芟嗨啤?/p>
However, it spread to Denmark in the 18th century and has since become an integral part of the country's culture and self-identity.
但18世紀(jì)傳入丹麥后,它就成為丹麥文化和身份認(rèn)同中不可分割的一部分了。
Hygge's international export has seen an explosion of themed cookbooks and lifestyle guides, alongside Scandinavian-themed restaurants, cafes and bars in the UK which boast intimate settings, simple decor, and plenty of comfort food.
Hygge走出國門,走向了世界。主題食譜和生活指南呈爆炸式增長,英國還出現(xiàn)了斯堪的納維亞主題的餐廳、咖啡館和酒吧,環(huán)境私密,裝潢簡單,還提供大量令人身心愉悅的食物。
