中共中央總書(shū)記、國(guó)家主席、中央軍委主席胡錦濤4日下午看望參加全國(guó)政協(xié)十一屆一次會(huì)議民革、臺(tái)盟、臺(tái)聯(lián)委員時(shí)強(qiáng)調(diào)，要牢牢把握兩岸關(guān)系和平發(fā)展的主題，真誠(chéng)為兩岸同胞謀福祉、為臺(tái)海地區(qū)謀和平，維護(hù)國(guó)家主權(quán)和領(lǐng)土完整，維護(hù)中華民族根本利益。

Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Tuesday that secessionist activities in Taiwan have become the greatest menace to China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, but such activities are doomed to fail.
The “Taiwan independence” activities have run counter to the Chinese nation's strong will to safeguard national unity. Such activities will get nowhere and are doomed to fail.
胡錦濤指出“臺(tái)獨(dú)”分裂活動(dòng)已成為對(duì)國(guó)家主權(quán)和領(lǐng)土完整的最大禍害，但是這些分裂活動(dòng)是注定要失敗的。
"臺(tái)獨(dú)"分裂活動(dòng)即secessionist activities in Taiwan 或 "Taiwan independence" activities。
該報(bào)道中的menace就是威脅、禍害的意思，也可以用作動(dòng)詞，例如：Your vicious dog is menacing my cat! （你那條惡狗對(duì)我家的貓?zhí)珒戳耍。?。run counter to 是違反、與...背道而馳的意思，而be doomed to通常用來(lái)表示“注定會(huì)…”。
