British Film Week 2012

This winter, Beijing and Xi'an will each host British Film Week, providing a treat for fans of British film, acting talent and culture in both cities. In Beijing, British Film Week will be held at art-house cinema complex MOMA Broadway Cinematheque from December 5th to December 16th, and will be opened by acclaimed British director and screenwriter Terence Davies, presenting his latest film The Deep Blue Sea.

One of the major film events in the UK Now festival, British Film Week will feature seven of some of the best recent UK film releases. Selected by the British Council (operating in China as the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy), the programme will give Chinese film-lovers exposure to a range of exciting and unknown British cinema.

It is impossible to list every great British film, but there are blockbuster titles that resonate with audiences everywhere, whether the box-office record-breaking Harry Potter series or the 2011 acclaimed Academy Award-winning The King's Speech. British cinematic characters are just as memorable, whether special agent 007, James Bond, who has thrilled audiences for over five decades, or unlikely screen star Mr Bean, who has made British humour familiar the world over. Beyond the big-studio hits, the UK film industry shines through the independent and art-house film sectors, and in every genre from shorts to animation and drama to documentaries.

British Film Week, Beijing will have British auteur Terence Davies, described by the New York Review of Books as Britain's greatest living film director, in attendance as guest of honour. Davies' most recent feature, the critically acclaimed The Deep Blue Sea, will open the celebrations on December 5th, followed by a Q&A with the director. The film's second screening on December 7th will also be followed by a talk with the director.

Programme highlights

The British Film Week programme presents seven films produced or restored between 2010 and 2012, including: The Deep Blue Sea, an adaptation of the Terrence Rattigan play about a destructive love affair across classes, starring Tom Hiddleston and Rachel Weisz; Submarine, an archetypal, coming-of-age British indie film; Wuthering Heights, an innovative re-telling of the English classic; acclaimed documentary Senna, created in memory of the great Brazilian racing-car driver Ayrton Senna; and Dreams of a Life, a true-life exploration of loneliness and anonymity in the big city.

The programme also features two classic films which were digitally re-mastered in 2012: The Lodger, Alfred Hitchcock's 1927 silent film and the first directed in his inimitable trademark style; and 1968 cult-animation Yellow Submarine, which takes audiences on a musical journey through Beatles pop songs and surreal '60s pop-art.
