Introduction
It’s the General Strike 1926: just seven years after the horrors of the First World War, trenches and miners’ unions are leading countrywide protests against harsh austerity cuts imposed by a Liberal-Conservative government.
Set in the village of Carhill, Scotland, in the heart of the Fife coalfields, The Happy Lands follows the journey of law-abiding citizens who become law-breakers in a battle against the state. This intimate portrayal of three families’ struggle depicts the human consequences of impersonal economics. The coal company that employs most of the village is colluding with government forces to keep the ‘red threat’ under control. As the villagers stand up for their rights, their struggle inspires and galvanises national support. Faith forged
