Speaking to the leaders of tomorrow, Sarkozy expressed deep concerns about environmental challenges facing the world. He says China has a tradition of respecting the harmony between man and nature. He also acknowledges China's initiatives as well as its potential in future cooperation relating to curbing pollution.
Sarkozy said, "China can make this strategic decision. Firstly, because it has amazing attributes: in education -- particularly in science -- its planning capabilities and economic vitality its global influence and prestige And also because China must adapt -- I'm thinking of the challenges of urbanization as well as the environmental risks brought about by its quick economic development."
Sarkozy seeks to cooperate with China in this endeavor. An agreement on combating climate change was released on Monday. The two countries decided to form a strategic partnership in dealing with the issues. They promised greater efforts in implementing the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol.
PH.D candidate Zhang Zhichao of Tsinghua university said, "The agreement can allow us to do a lot of things together. We can learn from France's experiences in using nuclear technology to save energy and cut emission. And a close partnership with China can also help Sarkozy promote his Green Evolution in France."
