China holds anti-hijacking exercise for Olympics
|
China has conducted an anti-hijacking drill in Dalian, a coastal city in the country's northeastern province of Liaoning, in preparation for next year's Olympic Games.
"Falcon 07", carried out on Sunday, consisted of a raid on hijackers and rescue operations for passengers held hostage as well as a fire-fighting operation for a plane that had burst into flames upon landing.
More than 600 people from civil aviation, public security, safety, health, fire fighting and armed police departments joined the drill.
Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan observed the exercise and urged more efforts to adopt precautionary measures and relevant international cooperation to ensure aviation safety.
"It is an important task to counter terrorism and maintain social stability," he said.
"Next year's Olympics will put hijacking to the test as politicians, athletes, journalists and tourists worldwide will swarm into China and aviation capacity is estimated to increase about 50 percent," said Wang Changshun, deputy director of the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China.
Zhang Xinfeng, vice minister of public security, said that some international terrorist groups are infiltrating China, posing new challenges to anti-hijacking efforts.
