Reader Question: “But it was his outsized and riotous attack on cloud computing (‘The Cloud!’) that brought the house down.” Could you explain “bring the house down”?
My comments: Also known as “bring down the house” , the term “bring the house down” is generally used when talking about a performance, whether it is a comedian doing an act in a small club, a singer belting out songs in a concert hall, or actors on stage in a theatre. It means to successfully entertain and make the audience laugh, clap loudly and be overall extremely pleased and gratified with a performance. The word “house” in this sense represents a place of performance, like an arena, auditorium, or those mentioned above. It can be used in the following way, for example: “When Beyoncé performs in Beijing next week at the Wukesong Arena, she is sure to bring the house down.” Related stories | |
