Saddam Hussein dodged questions from prosecutors cross-examining him for the first time Wednesday over a crackdown against Shiites in the 1980s. Standing alone in a black suit in thedefendants' pen, Saddam cooperated with the court at times, grinning at the chief prosecutor and reciting poetry to the judge.
pen除表示我們?nèi)粘K姷摹颁摴P”外,還有一層意思指a fenced enclosure for animals(圈養(yǎng)牲畜的圍欄),如:a pen of sheep(一欄羊),由此,pen可引申為“監(jiān)禁”或“監(jiān)獄”。
The sheep have to be penned every night.(羊群每晚都得關(guān)進(jìn)圈里。)
The desire to travel has been pent up for the last two years.(近兩年來心中老是憋著想出門旅行的愿望。)
