全球最大的航空公司--美國航空公司的航班4月2日從芝加哥奧海爾國際機(jī)場起飛，次日下午抵達(dá)上海浦東國際機(jī)場，這標(biāo)志著美國航空公司芝加哥-上海的每日直達(dá)航班正式投入運(yùn)營。美國航空公司負(fù)責(zé)人表示：“開通中國航線對我們意義重大，這將加強(qiáng)美國航空公司在全球的競爭地位?！?/p>

One such strategy was its Sunday launch of daily non-stop flights to China.
報(bào)道中，由于全球油價(jià)攀升、航空公司之間相互打“價(jià)格戰(zhàn)”，“芝加哥-上?！?每日直航的政策可以幫助美國航空公司保持有利的競爭地位，由此afloat可以解釋為：free or out of difficulty, especially financial difficulty（順利的，免受經(jīng)濟(jì)困難的）。舉個(gè)例子：The firm couldn't keep the business afloat during the recession.（在經(jīng)濟(jì)衰退期間, 這家公司不能順利維持業(yè)務(wù)。）
另外，afloat原意指在空中或海上“漂浮的狀態(tài)”，如：The ship was listing badly but still kept afloat. （船傾側(cè)得很厲害, 但卻仍然漂浮不沉。）由此，afloat也可引申為“流傳；散播；計(jì)劃等尚未定案”，舉個(gè)例子：There' s a story afloat that he' ll resign.（ 有傳聞?wù)f他要辭職。）
