Why do planes dim their cabin light when they take off?

When you fly, you may have noticed that every time the plane takes off or lands at night the cabin crew dim the lights. The reason is toacclimatizepassenger's eyes to darker surroundings. This isn't purely for comfort but is a valuable part of aircraft safety. If the plane had to be evacuated in an emergency, passenger's eyes would be better acclimatized to the darkness outside.
