The use of Christmas lights goes back to 18th-century Germany where they decorated Christmas trees in wealthy homes. Christmas trees displayed publicly and illuminated with electric lights became popular at the beginning of the 20th century. In Britain, string of lights displayed on Christmas trees, walls and doors are called "fairy lights".
