“山鬼”，即山中之神。通常被認(rèn)為是一位女神。有研究者認(rèn)為，本詩講述了一場“人神戀愛”，即山鬼愛上了人間的公子的故事。也有研究者認(rèn)為，按先秦祭祀禮俗，巫者降神必須先將自己裝扮得與神靈相貌、服飾相似，神靈才肯“附身”受祭。本詩以裝扮成山鬼模樣的女巫，入山接迎神靈（公子）而不遇的情狀，來表現(xiàn)世人虔誠迎神以求福佑的思戀之情。
