Diarmuid: Hello and welcome to On the Town from BBC Learning English. I'm Diarmuid.
If you love books, then this is just the programme for you.
Diarmuid: Yes, Charing Cross Road, near Soho, has long been a street famous for its bookshops.
Yang Li: You can find all kinds of books there, can't you?
Diarmuid: Yes, such as the foreign language bookshop Grant and Cutler, Borders, and Waterstones. But one of the oldest is Foyles bookshop.
Yang Li: That's right. F(xiàn)oyles was once the largest bookshop in the world and it has become a tourist destination in London.
Diarmuid: We spoke to the Product Manager Kate Gunning. She gives us an idea of how big Foyles bookshop is.
In terms of the number of titles we stock, which is just as important to people, we must be one of the largest. We've got, as a guide, upwards of 220,000 titles.
Kate Gunning, Product Manager, Foyles bookshop
Diarmuid: In terms of the different titles, Foyles is one of the world's largest bookshops, with 220,000 titles.
Yang Li: In terms of, 就什么而言。 220,000 different titles.
Diarmuid: How about the different categories of books?
Kate again.
We have got a large mixture of general trade books and more academic books; we've got a large history section with lots of military history, politics; we've got a big archaeology section which is extremely popular amongst our customers. We've got an extensive area for books that deal with English as a foreign language, which is also extremely popular – people come from literally all over the world to shop (at) that particular department.
Kate Gunning, Product Manager, Foyles bookshop
Diarmuid: Let's have a look at the list: general trade books and academic books.
Diarmuid: History and archaeology.
Diarmuid: English as a foreign language.
Yang Li:
Diarmuid: They also have an extensive department on film and drama.
Yang Li:
Diarmuid: That's just some of the conventional categories in the bookshop; but they also have some unconventional categories, which you may not find in other bookshops.
We also have a very extensive area on our second floor which deals with Asian history and culture and we are increasing the amount of books we stock in – for instance – Chinese, because we're finding that we're getting an increasing amount of requests from customers for those kinds of books. We also have rooms with second-hand and antiquarian books; we stock sheet music, which a lot of bookshops wouldn't consider stocking; so there's something for everyone there really; we've got a very big children's department with a tank with piranha fish in it.
Kate Gunning, Product Manager, Foyles bookshop
Yang Li: Kate
Diarmuid: Yes, they are finding that they are getting an increasing amount of requests from customers for Chinese books.
Diarmuid: Second-hand and antiquarian books, and sheet music; they have something for everyone. There's also a big children's department, with a tank with piranha fish in it.
Yang Li: A tank with piranha fish in it. 啊,a tank with piranha fish in it 童書部還特意擺上了布拉魚魚缸,滿足孩子們的好奇心。
Diarmuid: Kate thinks that there are good reasons why Foyles has become a tourist destination which attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Yang Li: A tourist destination, 旅游者的參觀目標(biāo)。
I think it is partly those things – the size of the shop and the range that we have available. I think, also, we've been here for more than a hundred years, so it's got a strong brand I think and it's considered very traditional – it is a destination for tourists. So we're trying to make Foyles – as well as having a big range – trying to make it as interesting a place to shop – so you can have a cup of coffee, you can buy antique books as gifts, you can pick up gifts and stationary – so things other than books.
Kate Gunning, Product Manager, Foyles bookshop
Diarmuid: Foyles bookshop has been around for a hundred years and has a strong brand like Harrods. Strong brand.
Diarmuid: As well as having a big range of books, they have made it an interesting place to go shopping. Visitors can stop to have a coffee, to buy antique books as gifts, and many other things to buy just in one shop.
Diarmuid: After all, it's a brand and an enjoyable place to visit.
Yang Li: Hope you get to see it when you come to London.
Diarmuid: Thanks for listening and see you next time with more On the Town from BBC Learning English.
Yang Li: Bye bye.
Diarmuid: Bye.
