And I'm Phil. We've got a question from one of our listeners.
Question
Greetings! I was wondering if you could tell me the differences between 'as well as', 'in addition to', 'moreover' and 'furthermore'. Thank you!
Phil
These are all expressions that we can use to add information, so it's good to look at how they're different.

這四個(gè)搭配或詞語(yǔ)都可以在句子中起到補(bǔ)充或添加信息的作用。其中,搭配 “as well as” 和 “in addition to” 的意思都是 “除…之外還,和”,都充當(dāng)句子的介詞成分,引出與此前談?wù)摰膬?nèi)容有關(guān)的其它信息。這兩個(gè)搭配的后面通常都跟名詞。
Phil
'As well as' is probably more common in spoken English. 'In addition to' is a bit more formal. Notice that both of these expressions can put a slight emphasis on the item that doesn't follow 'as well as' or 'in addition to'.
Jiaying
在英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)交流中,搭配 “as well as” 比 “in addition to” 更常用。就正式程度而言,“in addition to” 比 “as well as” 更正式。注意:這兩個(gè)搭配都可以用來(lái)強(qiáng)調(diào)在句子中與它們引出的名詞所并列的名詞部分。聽(tīng)兩個(gè)例句。
Examples
I'm going to Seoul soon, so I've started studying Korean as well as Japanese.
(我很快就要去首爾了,所以除了日語(yǔ)以外,我也開(kāi)始學(xué)韓語(yǔ)了。)
There's a bus service now in addition to the train. The bus is often much cheaper.
(除了火車以外,現(xiàn)在還通公共汽車。坐公共汽車通常要便宜得多。)
Jiaying
搭配 “as well as” 和 “in addition to” 還可以用于句首。注意:我們可以使用不帶介詞 “to” 的副詞搭配 “in addition”,但它的后面跟的是一句完整的話。請(qǐng)聽(tīng)例句,第一個(gè)例句中使用了 “as well as”,第二個(gè)和第三個(gè)例句中都使用了 “in addition”。
Examples
As well as playing football, I've just started playing hockey. It's good to try new sports!
(除了踢足球以外,我還剛開(kāi)始打曲棍球。嘗試新的運(yùn)動(dòng)是一件好事?。?/p>
I've been studying Japanese for years. In addition, I've started studying Korean.
(我學(xué)日語(yǔ)已經(jīng)很多年了。除此之外,我又開(kāi)始學(xué)習(xí)韓語(yǔ)。)
The train is good. In addition, there's a bus service.
(火車很好。除此之外,還有公共汽車服務(wù)。)
Phil
Next, we've got 'furthermore' and 'moreover'. These both sound a lot more formal than 'as well as' and 'in addition to'. They are far more likely to be used in written rather than spoken language.
Jiaying
Examples
Our finances are a problem because we have not recruited enough students. Furthermore, our costs have increased.
(我們的資金是個(gè)問(wèn)題,因?yàn)闆](méi)有招到足夠的學(xué)生。此外,我們的成本也增加了。)
The restaurant is successful because it has had very favourable reviews. Moreover, the location is very well-suited.
(這家餐館之所以成功是因?yàn)樗盏搅朔浅:玫脑u(píng)價(jià)。此外,地理位置也非常好。)

So, the main differences between 'in addition to', 'in addition', 'as well as', 'furthermore' and 'moreover' are the levels of formality and whether they are used as prepositions or adverbs.
Jiaying
“In addition to”、“in addition”、“as well as”、“furthermore” 和 “moreover” 之間的主要區(qū)別在于它們的正式程度不同,以及它們?cè)诰渥又惺浅洚?dāng)介詞成分還是作副詞使用。
