I'm Jiaying – joining me is Beth.
Beth
Hello, everybody.
Jiaying
在本期節(jié)目中,我們來回答一個和 “火” 有關(guān)的問題,問題如下:
Question
親愛的 “你問我答” 主持人,你們好。我想請教一下 “flame、blaze、flare” 這三個有關(guān) “火焰” 的詞有什么區(qū)別。謝謝!
Beth
Thank you for your question. Well, all three are related to fire but are used in different ways. Let's look at 'flame' first. 'Flame' can be a verb, but it's more natural to use it as a noun. 'Flame' as a noun refers to a stream of glowing, burning gas in the fire. Neither of the other two words are used to refer to the stream of gas.
Jiaying
這三個詞都可以翻譯成 “火”,但它們的用法不同。問題中的第一個詞 “flame” 雖然可以作動詞使用,但它作名詞時的用法更自然。名詞 “flame” 指的 “火” 是 “火焰,火舌”,也就是 “燃燒中的一股氣流”。其它的兩個詞都沒有 “(一道)火焰” 的含義。請聽兩個使用了名詞 “flame” 的例句。
Examples
He lit the match and it produced a single flame.
(他點燃了火柴,火柴上燃起了一道火焰。)
The flames spread through the house and the firefighters tried desperately to put them out.
(當(dāng)時,火焰吞噬了整棟房屋,消防隊員拼盡全力滅火。)
Jiaying
在上面的兩個例句中,名詞 “flame” 都表示 “火焰、火舌”。
如果某個物體 “著火了”,就可以說 “in flames”,或者用 “burst into flames” 來表示 “突然開始猛烈燃燒”,也就是 “突然起火”。聽兩個例句。
Examples
The building was in flames when the police arrived.
(警察到達(dá)時,大樓已經(jīng)著火了。)
The car burst into flames after it broke down.
(這輛車拋錨后突然起火了。)
Beth
'Blaze' is most commonly used as a noun and refers to a huge, very strong fire. The emphasis is on the size. Neither of the other words are used to describe a large fire.
Jiaying
“Blaze” 常用作名詞,指 “大火,烈火”,強調(diào) “火勢極為猛烈”。聽兩個例句。
Examples
The footage shows the blaze as it spread through the factory.
(視頻中播放了大火在工廠蔓延的情景。)
The blaze was so intense that the heat melted the metal structure.
(火勢猛烈,熱量熔化了金屬結(jié)構(gòu)。)
Beth
'Blaze' can also be used as a verb to describe the action of burning very fiercely and brightly.
Jiaying
“Blaze” 還可以作動詞使用,表示 “熊熊燃燒,強烈地發(fā)光”。聽兩個包含動詞 “blaze” 的例句。
Examples
The Sun blazed over the desert.
(陽光照耀著沙漠。)
The fire blazed for hours, long into the night.
(大火燒了幾個小時,直至深夜。)
Jiaying
最后,我們來講問題中的第三個詞:“flare”。
Beth
'Flare' can be used as a noun or a verb and refers to a fire suddenly increasing in brightness.
Jiaying
沒錯,名詞 “flare” 指 “突然閃耀的火光”。動詞 “flare” 則表示 “火突然燒旺起來”。比如: “flare up(一下子燒起來)”。不論是作名詞還是作動詞,“flare” 都強調(diào) “火焰突然旺起來,過程迅速且短暫”。聽兩個例句。
Examples
There was a flare in the fire when he threw some paper onto it.
(當(dāng)他把紙扔到火上時,火焰中躥起火光。)
The fire suddenly flared up again when the wind blew on it.
(風(fēng)吹過,火一下子又燃了起來。)
Jiaying
好了,來歸納一下:“flame” 作名詞時指 “(一股)火焰,火舌”?!癇laze” 作名詞指 “烈火,大火”,作動詞表示 “熊熊燃燒,猛烈地閃耀”?!癋lare” 作名詞時指 “火光”,作動詞指 “突然燒旺”,強調(diào) “燃燒的過程迅速且短暫”。
