Jiaying

Question
I am writing to ask about a few questions concerning the use of ‘linger’. The questions are as below:

1. What is the difference between ‘linger’ and ‘linger on’? Is?‘linger on’ a phrasal verb?

2. If someone spends too much time thinking about something, can we say that this person ‘lingers on’ their thoughts?

Thank you very much.

Jiaying
謝謝 Tiffany 的問(wèn)題。我請(qǐng)我的同事 Tom 來(lái)幫忙解答這個(gè)問(wèn)題。Hi, Tom!

Tom
Hi, Jiaying, and hello to our audience!

Jiaying
我們來(lái)看一看問(wèn)題中提到的基本動(dòng)詞 “l(fā)inger”。動(dòng)詞 “l(fā)inger” 的一個(gè)常見(jiàn)的用法是 “在某地多待一段時(shí)間,逗留”。Tom,你能舉一個(gè)包含動(dòng)詞 “l(fā)inger” 的例子嗎?

Tom
Yes. So, some students may linger after a class has finished. This means they are avoiding leaving or leaving very slowly. And this might be because they’re waiting for their friends to finish class as well.

Jiaying
Thanks. 剛剛,Tom 舉了一個(gè)例子,句子中的動(dòng)詞 “l(fā)inger” 的意思是學(xué)生們放學(xué)后在校 “逗留,徘徊”。他們遲遲不回家的原因可能是在等朋友。

除了表示“ 逗留” 以外,我們還可以用動(dòng)詞 “l(fā)inger” 描述 “事物持續(xù)存留,久久不散”。

Tom
Exactly! So, for example, I ate fish for lunch today. And the smell of fish lingered for hours!

Jiaying
Tom 說(shuō)他午飯吃魚(yú)了,過(guò)了好幾個(gè)小時(shí),魚(yú)的味道還是在辦公室里 “久久不散”。在英語(yǔ)里,我們可以用 “the smell lingered” 來(lái)描述 “氣味持續(xù)存在,不消散” 的情況。

動(dòng)詞 “l(fā)inger” 還可以表示 “想法和情感存留,無(wú)法忘懷”,是這樣嗎?

Tom
Yes. For example, I am embarrassed about my smelly lunch, and I will think about it all evening. So, I can say ‘the memory will linger in my mind’.

Jiaying
Tom “忘不了” 讓辦公室里一股魚(yú)味的尷尬經(jīng)歷。這段記憶 “縈繞在他的腦海里”:The memory will linger in his mind.

Tom
I could also say ‘the memory will linger on’. ‘Linger on’ is a phrasal verb.

Jiaying
Correct! Tom 提到的這個(gè)短語(yǔ)和 Tiffany 的第二個(gè)問(wèn)題有關(guān):能不能在談?wù)撚洃浀恼Z(yǔ)境中使用動(dòng)詞短語(yǔ) “l(fā)inger on”?答案是肯定的。

動(dòng)詞 “l(fā)inger” 和動(dòng)詞短語(yǔ) “l(fā)inger on” 的含義相同?!癓inger on” 不及物,也就是后面不需要加賓語(yǔ)。記住,動(dòng)詞短語(yǔ)通常暗示說(shuō)話的語(yǔ)氣是非正式的。

Tom
We can also use another preposition: ‘over’. For example, I like drinking coffee. And I love to linger over a nice coffee in a cafe. I enjoy taking my time.

Jiaying
沒(méi)錯(cuò),Tom 提到了另一個(gè)動(dòng)詞短語(yǔ) “l(fā)inger over”。如果某人 “l(fā)inger over something”,意思就是此人 “慢慢地做某事”。Tom 舉了一個(gè)和咖啡有關(guān)的例子:“l(fā)inger over a nice coffee(細(xì)細(xì)品嘗一杯醇香的咖啡)”。動(dòng)詞短語(yǔ) “l(fā)inger over” 及物,后面需要加賓語(yǔ)。

Tom
‘Linger over’ is a neutral expression and it can have a negative meaning. For example, we could linger over making a difficult decision, or we could linger over a painful memory.

Jiaying
注意,Tom 強(qiáng)調(diào) “l(fā)inger over something” 也有 “總想著某件事情” 的意思,因?yàn)槿藗兛赡軙?huì) “l(fā)inger over making a difficult decision(對(duì)困難的事情猶豫不決)” 或者 “l(fā)inger over a painful memory(留戀一段痛苦的回憶)”。

Tom
Yes. So, for example: Steve is still lingering over the memory of last year’s break-up with his girlfriend.

Jiaying
A good example! Tom,在英語(yǔ)中,“l(fā)inger over something” 有沒(méi)有更簡(jiǎn)短的形式呢?

Tom
Yes! So, ‘don’t linger over it’ is a common expression in British English. This means ‘don’t spend too much time worrying about something’.

Jiaying
英式英語(yǔ)說(shuō)法 “don’t linger over it” 用來(lái)建議他人 “別總為某個(gè)問(wèn)題牽腸掛肚”,人們也說(shuō) “don’t linger over it too much(別多想了)”。

Tom
So, thank you for this question, Tiffany! I hope our response means that you won’t linger over this question in future.

Jiaying
