A contact lens that can release a drug if it detects high pressure within the eye has been created by scientists who say it could help treat glaucoma.

Glaucoma is an eye disease that involves damage to the optic nerve, and can lead to blindness if left untreated.

The most common form of the disease, known as primary open angle glaucoma, is thought to affect almost 10% of people older than 75.

This form is generally caused by increased pressure within the eye, usually as a result of a buildup of fluid.

Researchers in China revealed they have developed a contact lens that can sense an increase in pressure within the eye and release an anti-glaucoma drug should the pressure exceed a certain level.

>300,000 US COVID deaths could have been averted through vaccination

COVID-19 vaccines could have prevented at least 318,000 virus-related deaths between January 2021 and April 2022, a new analysis found.

The analysis used real-world data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and The New York Times, and was done by researchers from Brown School of Public Health, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Microsoft AI for Health.

Their findings suggest that at least "every second person" who died from COVID since vaccines became available might have been saved by getting the shot.

>Café serves writers on tight deadlines

"The Manuscript Writing Cafe only allows in people who have a writing deadline to face!” owner Takuya Kawai tweeted. “It's in order to maintain a level of focus and tense atmosphere at the cafe! Thank you for your understanding.”

The cafe, which only opened a few days ago, charges patrons by time used (at a rate of 150 yen per 30 minutes), and is equipped with USB ports, computer stands, and free Wi-Fi.

Struggling writers can also bring their own food and drinks, or have it delivered there since coffee and water are the only things available, but it's pretty strict when it comes to the actual writing.

When entering the cafe, patrons must write down at the reception desk how many words they plan to write and by what time they plan to finish.

Every hour, a member of the staff will come by to check on their progress and apply a predetermined pressure level to help move things along.

>Scientists grow plants in moon soil

For the first time, scientists have grown plants in soil from the moon collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts.

Researchers had no idea if anything would sprout in the harsh moon dirt and wanted to see if it could be used to grow food by a new generation of lunar explorers.

The results stunned them.

"Holy cow. Plants actually grow in lunar stuff. Are you kidding me?" said Robert Ferl of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

Ferl and his colleagues planted thale cress in moon soil returned by Apollo 11’s Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and other moonwalkers years ago, and the seeds sprouted.

The downside was that after the first week, the coarseness and other properties of the lunar soil stressed the small, flowering weeds so much that they grew more slowly than seedlings planted in fake moon dirt from Earth. Most of the moon plants ended up stunted.
