>WHO warns pandemic will drag on into 2022

The Covid pandemic will "go on for a year longer than it needs to" because poorer countries are not getting the vaccines they need, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.

Dr Bruce Aylward, senior leader at WHO, said it meant the Covid crisis could "easily drag on deep into 2022".

Less than 5% of Africa's population have been vaccinated, compared to 40% on most other continents.

Aylward appealed to wealthy countries to give up their places in the queue for vaccines so that pharmaceutical companies can prioritize the lowest-income countries instead.

The People's Vaccine - an alliance of charities - has released new figures suggesting just one in seven of the doses promised by pharmaceutical companies and wealthy countries are actually reaching their destinations in poorer countries.

The vast majority of Covid vaccines have been given in high-income or upper middle-income countries.

Africa accounts for just 2.6% of doses administered globally.

>Lantern pods for you to sit in

It’s called the lantern partition, and when you sit down at the table, you slide underneath it.

While the top section is a traditionally styled chochin (Japanese paper lantern), part-way down it transitions to clear plastic, allowing you and your dining companions to remove your masks while you eat but still have a protective barrier that allows you to see one another, all without taking up any extra space on the table.

The partitions have recently been installed in the restaurant of Hoshinoya Tokyo, a luxury hotel in Tokyo’s Otemachi neighborhood that’s part of the Hoshino Resorts group.

Each lantern partition is 102 centimeters tall and 75 centimeters in diameter, with its own light source to keep your face and food illuminated.

Ordinarily, the restaurant is only open to people staying at the hotel, but for the Lantern Banquet they may invite outside guests to join them in this unique dining experience.

>Supermarkets use cardboard cutouts to hide gaps

Tesco has begun using pictures of asparagus, carrots, oranges and grapes in its fresh produce aisles, prompting ridicule on social media.

Shoppers have spotted fake carrots in Fakenham, cardboard asparagus in London, pictures of oranges and grapes in Milton Keynes, and 2D washing liquid bottles in Cambridge.

The tactic comes as shortages of truck drivers, pickers and packers on farms and food processing plants lead to low availability of some items in supermarkets.

Problems at ports, where handlers are struggling to cope with a surge in deliveries for the festive season, are also leading to shortages.

The rise of online shopping, has meanwhile led to many supermarkets no longer stocking non-food items, such as televisions, CDs or kettles, that they once did, leaving areas of empty space that many have been unable to fill with alternative products.

Some have brought in other services, such as opticians, key cutting or dry cleaners to take up space.

>Baby boomers move back in with parents

The Covid pandemic has led to growing numbers of baby boomers in Britain moving back in with their elderly parents, experts said. The reasons are varied, from the positive – grown-up children ensuring their parents had care and company during lockdowns – to the negative, including financial and relationship breakdowns.

Financial concerns are a key reason for older people moving back home: more than 355,000 people aged 50 and older are unemployed, with 31,000 having been made redundant between May and July alone, according to the Office for National Statistics.

With rising inflation and increasing energy bills on the horizon, the idea of sharing the costs of living could also be attractive.

Polly Neate, chief executive of Shelter, the homelessness and housing charity, said falling incomes – whether through furlough, job losses or relationship breakdowns – had left some older people “barely hanging on to their homes during the pandemic”.
