>App maps shady spots to guide walkers

A new app promises to help Barcelona residents find the shadiest route between two places to avoid extreme heat.

Cool Walks, a routing tool for pedestrians first developed at a data visualization contest, aims to show users a variety of walking routes to take for their intended destinations.

Users can choose the most direct route, a shady route that may take a little longer, or they can set the app to "vampire mode", which avoids direct sunlight at all costs.

Users can also use the app to find drinking fountains, or places to shelter from the sun.

The app uses a tool called Lidar to create high-resolution models of ground elevation. This information is combined with data on the sun's path to work out where the shade is at any given time of day.

>Pikachu-themed plane unveiled

The Pokémon Company announced the Pikachu Jet BC on June 21, a new aircraft with a Pikachu-themed design, developed in collaboration with Japanese low-cost airline Skymark.

The first Pikachu Jet BC departed Tokyo's Haneda airport on Monday, heading for Naha Airport in Okinawa Prefecture.

The plane's exterior design features Flying Pikachu, with some additional details such as a Pikachu peeking out of one of the airplane windows.

The inside of the airplane has some neat fan service as well – from headrest design to the amenities served, Pikachu is everywhere.

The aircraft is part of the Pokémon Company's "Flying Pikachu Project", a new plan that seems to be centered on stimulating tourism in Okinawa, Japan's tropical prefecture that stretches across multiple islands.

>Pupils to be regularly weighed in school

Primary school pupils in the UK will be regularly weighed in class amid fears that the COVID pandemic has sparked a childhood obesity crisis.

Before the COVID outbreak, the UK already had high rates of childhood obesity.

In England, one in three kids leaving primary school was overweight, while one in five was obese.

For kids in year six, the obesity rate was 20.2% in 2018-19 and climbed to 21% in 2019-20.

Experts believe that homeschooling, less exercise and increased snacking caused by lockdowns have caused weight gain in kids.

Currently, schoolchildren are weighed twice during their time at primary school.

>Earworms haunt you when you sleep

We're all familiar with songs getting stuck in our head while we're awake, but it turns out this can happen during sleep as well.

A new study investigating the phenomenon indicates that earworms invading our brains at night could cause problems in getting to sleep and staying asleep.

"Our brains continue to process music even when none is playing, including apparently while we are asleep," says neuroscientist Michael Scullin from Baylor University.

He and colleagues used surveys of 199 people, as well as a sleep lab test involving 50 volunteers, to measure how listening to music before bedtime affects sleep.

In the survey part of the study, participants who frequently listened to music during the day were more likely to report persistent nighttime earworms, which then had a negative effect on sleep quality through the night.

Surprisingly, the instrumental versions of the songs caused about twice as many earworms (and more subsequent sleep problems) than the versions with vocals.

Scullin suggests avoiding listening to music right before bed to limit the chance of a catchy tune taking hold in our minds.
