A record 10.78 million students around China are expected to take this year's all-important national college entrance exam - the gaokao - from Monday to Tuesday, the Ministry of Education said on Wednesday. It's a slight increase from 10.71 million last year, when the exam was postponed for a month to July 7 and 8 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
教育部6月2日表示，今年全國(guó)高考報(bào)名1078萬人，比去年增加7萬人，再創(chuàng)歷史新高。今年的全國(guó)高考將于6月7日至8日舉行。2020年全國(guó)高考因新冠疫情推遲一個(gè)月，于當(dāng)年7月7日至8日舉行。

Vice-Premier Sun Chunlan has urged authorities to adopt the highest standards in organizing the exam and to ensure it proceeds smoothly.

COVID-19 patients and their close contacts will be allowed to sit exams in medical facilities or isolation venues if conditions permit, Sun said.
對(duì)核酸檢測(cè)陽(yáng)性感染者、密切接觸者等考生，經(jīng)專業(yè)評(píng)估、符合條件的可安排在救治場(chǎng)所或隔離場(chǎng)所考試。

The Ministry of Education said it has worked with local authorities to ensure the security of test papers and answer sheets throughout the exam.

Local authorities have adopted various detection methods to prevent any equipment for cheating from being smuggled into test centers and will conduct rigorous identity checks to screen out impostors, the ministry said.

Events were launched across China on Wednesday to award commemorative medals to Communist Party of China (CPC) members bearing five decades of Party membership. Eligible recipients are CPC members who would have been Party members for 50 full years or longer as of July 1, 2021, and have consistently performed well in their roles.

The awarding of honors, set to last until July 1, will see more than 7.1 million CPC members across the country receive the medals.

The medals, measuring 50 mm in diameter, are made of copper-zinc alloy, and come in hues of red and gold.

In the future, the memorial medal awarding is slated to take place once a year, around July 1.

It first launched on Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, including wearables and tablets, in August 2019.

The World Health Organization has proposed new names for Coronavirus variants using letters from the Greek alphabet.
世界衛(wèi)生組織提出用希臘字母表的字母重新命名新冠變種毒株。

WHO's naming scheme will be used to label noteworthy strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, such as "Delta" for the variant first detected in India, also known as B.1.617.2.
世衛(wèi)組織將為值得關(guān)注的新冠病毒變種重新命名，比如將印度首次發(fā)現(xiàn)的變種毒株命名為Delta，該毒株又名為B.1.617.2。

Naming variants after a geographical location - such as a country - is misleading because a Covid variant didn't necessarily emerge where it was initially identified, but people from that place are still blamed for a variant's spread.
