>Post-pandemic office debuts
Egyptian architect and designer Mohamed Radwan created a system of office pods for the post-COVID-19 workplace, for a project called "Q.workntine."
Last month, the design was recognized with an award in the Responsible Design category at the DNA Paris Design Awards.
Radwan's design creates individual pods for workers.
The pods could be a relatively safe solution for workers whose jobs are difficult or impossible to do at home.
Radwan says that the pod system can maintain the same number of employees.
Inside, the workspace looks like any typical cubicle.
Pods each have automatic doors that operate with facial recognition, so there's no need to touch and contaminate them.
The pods will be made of a non-porous material for easy disinfection.
Ventilation fans with built-in air purifiers prevent the virus spreading among coworkers.
The door is acrylic, with an airtight seal.
Hexagonal pods are arranged in a hive shape that can accommodate different office layouts.
Compared to a regular office layout, they take up about the same amount of space.
>Hollywood to cut intimacy
Starting June 12, Hollywood can resume film and TV production, California governor Gavin Newsom announced.
Hollywood's labor unions and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers joined forces to release a white paper last week, outlining their recommendations for how to safely resume film and TV production.
"Certain activities such as fight scenes or intimate scenes increase the risk of transmission," according to the white paper.
"When maintaining physical distancing is not possible...contact must be kept to the shortest amount of time possible."
The white paper mentions the use of live studio audiences during filming is "discouraged," but does not outright suggest a ban on them.
New safety guidelines on film sets will likely hardest hit craftspeople whose jobs require they work closely with actors: Costume designers, makeup artists, and hairstylists.
The task force acknowledged that some of their work simply "may not be possible while maintaining physical distancing from others."
In addition, every set could soon have its own designated COVID-19 "compliance officer" who works across all departments to ensure guidelines are being followed and "to address issues as they arise."
>Pandemic-era 'gap year' rises
A survey conducted by Baltimore-based consulting firm Art & Science Group found that 17% of students had changed their college plans due to COVID-19.
Of those students, 16% indicated that they would take a gap year, while 17% said they would wait until the spring semester (which would start in January 2021) to enroll in university full-time.
A third said they would enroll in university on a part-time basis.
In a recent study on COVID-19 and university access, the London-based Sutton Trust found that one in five university applicants (19%) in the UK had changed their mind about university attendance for the 2020 academic year - whether in terms of their preferred university or by deferring a place in favor of a gap year.
Joshua Kim and Edward Maloney, authors of Learning Innovation and The Future Of Higher Education, said that having an unplanned and unstructured gap year that essentially equates to a "leave of absence" can be detrimental to students, because they're more likely to lose their momentum and decide not to attend college altogether.
For those who struggle to find meaningful activities, Michelle Dittmer, president and co-founder of the Canadian Gap Year Association, suggests thinking about using the skills you have to help organizations that might benefit.
