2017年4月1日，中共中央、國務院印發(fā)通知，我國將設立對標深圳經濟特區(qū)和上海浦東新區(qū)的河北雄安新區(qū)（Xiongan New Area），作為又一經濟引擎，推動京津冀協(xié)同發(fā)展。設立雄安新區(qū)是以習近平同志為核心的黨中央作出的一項重大的歷史性戰(zhàn)略選擇(the establishment of the Xiongan New Area is a major historic and strategic choice made by the Communist Party of China Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core)，是國家大事(be of national significance)、千年大計(a strategy crucial for the millennium to come)。

雄安新區(qū)位于北京市西南100公里處，位于京津冀地區(qū)核心腹地，由河北省保定市所轄雄縣、容城、安新3縣組成，區(qū)位優(yōu)勢明顯(incomparable geographical advantages)、交通便捷、生態(tài)環(huán)境優(yōu)良、資源豐富(immense resources)，發(fā)展空間充裕(plenty of room for development)。設立雄安新區(qū)將有助于疏解北京非首都功能( non-essential capital city functions)、探索人口密集地區(qū)優(yōu)化開發(fā)新模式(explore a new model of optimal development in densely populated areas)以及調整京津冀城市布局(restructure urban layout in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region)。雄安新區(qū)起步區(qū)面積約100平方公里，中期發(fā)展區(qū)面積約200平方公里，遠期控制區(qū)面積約2000平方公里。
2019年1月2日，中國政府網(wǎng)公布《國務院關于河北雄安新區(qū)總體規(guī)劃（2018—2035年）的批復》。批復指出，經中共中央、國務院同意，原則同意《河北雄安新區(qū)總體規(guī)劃（2018—2035年）》。
2020年1月，經黨中央同意，國務院批復《河北雄安新區(qū)起步區(qū)控制性規(guī)劃》和《河北雄安新區(qū)啟動區(qū)控制性詳細規(guī)劃》，標志著雄安新區(qū)規(guī)劃建設進入新階段。
