今年是農(nóng)歷鼠年，在英語里一般用the Year of the Rat來表示，當(dāng)然用the Year of the Mouse來表示也沒錯(cuò)。

不知道是不是因?yàn)槊桌鲜蟮男蜗筇钊肴诵?，大部分人看到mouse這個(gè)詞就會(huì)覺得是可愛的，惹人喜愛的形象，而看到rat這個(gè)詞就會(huì)想到“一只老鼠壞了一鍋湯”之類的負(fù)面形象。

從體型上來說，rat的體型比mouse稍大，一般有鴿子那么大，而mouse的體型較小，跟麻雀差不多。

Rat多生活在室外，最常見的有褐鼠（brown rat）、黑老鼠（black rat），還有田鼠（field rat）、大足鼠（Himalayan field rat）等，一般破壞性較強(qiáng)，且會(huì)引發(fā)并傳播鼠疫（bubonic plague）。

Mouse則多指家鼠（house mouse），一般藏在家中偷吃食物，如今也有人將mouse當(dāng)作寵物來養(yǎng)。

值得注意的是，rat的復(fù)數(shù)形式是rats，而mouse的復(fù)數(shù)形式是mice，可不要搞錯(cuò)了呀。

rat race 激烈的競(jìng)爭(zhēng)；殘酷、高壓的生存環(huán)境

He decided to get out of the rat race, and went to work on a farm.

rat's nest 一團(tuán)亂麻；亂作一團(tuán)；亂得像豬窩

We just moved in, and the place is a rat's nest.

mouse potato 電腦狂人（長(zhǎng)時(shí)間使用電腦的人）

I can't believe I spend 10 hours a day on the internet. I'm such a mouse potato!

poor as a church mouse 窮得叮當(dāng)響；一貧如洗

You want to borrow money from him? He is as poor as a church mouse.

quiet as a mouse 悄無聲息；沉默寡言

She was as quiet as a mouse that nobody noticed her presence.
她不聲不響，以至于沒人意識(shí)到她也在場(chǎng)。

play cat and mouse 玩貓捉老鼠

Stop playing cat and mouse with me and tell me what you really want.
別跟我玩貓捉老鼠了，直接告訴我你想要什么。
