Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin will step down as CEO and president, respectively, of Alphabet, the internet giant's parent company announced on Tuesday.

Page and Brin will remain on the company's board of directors.

"We've never been ones to hold on to management roles when we think there's a better way to run the company. And Alphabet and Google no longer need two CEOs and a president," the pair wrote in an open letter about the management change. "While it has been a tremendous privilege to be deeply involved in the day-to-day management of the company for so long, we believe it's time to assume the role of proud parents - offering advice and love, but not daily nagging!" they wrote.

Page and Brin, who created Google in 1998 while students at Stanford University, have been noticeably absent from Google events in the past year. At the same time, Pichai has taken an increasingly prominent role in representing Alphabet during quarterly earnings calls with investors and in congressional hearings.
