A manhunt is underway after burglars broke into Green Vault at the Dresden Castle in eastern Germany Monday morning, and took off with jewelry reportedly worth up to a billion euros.
Burglars switched off a power supply to the royal palace and broke in through a window.
Once inside, the brazen raiders smashed open cabinets and stole three jewellery ensembles which were commissioned by Saxony's former ruler Augustus the Strong in an 18th-century show of power.
The museum's most valuable jewel, the 41-carat gem known as the Dresden Green Diamond, is safe. It is currently on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Marion Ackermann, director general of the museum, said "the priceless items cannot be sold on the art market legally - they're too well known."
>Prince stripped of royal duties
The Queen has cancelled a 60th birthday bash she had planned for Prince Andrew in February and has downgraded it to a small family dinner, British media reported.
The Duke of York has announced that he is stepping down from royal duties amid growing backlash over his ties with now deceased convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
"It has become clear to me over the past few days that my association with Jeffrey Epstein has become a major disruption to my family's work and the valuable work going on in the many organizations and charities that I am proud to support. Therefore, I have asked Her Majesty if I can step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, and she has given her permission," the scandal-hit prince said in a statement issued by Buckingham Palace.
People with ties to Buckingham Palace said they could not recall a senior member of the royal family having been suspended so abruptly and publicly from his or her duties.
Some praised the decision, saying it would take the prince out of the spotlight and buy time for the palace to try to rehabilitate his image.

>Crude dismissal of sick worker
NetEase, an internet company headquartered in Beijing, released two separate statements on Monday apologizing for its "simple and crude way" of discharging an employee who is suffering from serious heart disease.
"We paid him during his three-month sick leave and gave him compensation on Sept 19. But we apologize for the simple and crude, unsympathetic approaches and behavior in the process of his dismissal. Sorry, we were wrong," the statements said.
On Saturday, a former NetEase employee posted a story on a WeChat account, claiming that he was forced to leave the company after he was diagnosed with serious heart disease with the excuse of "poor performance", which he disputed.
He said that his request for economic compensation for being laid off and a performance-based bonus for projects he was involved in was also refused by the company. The former employee also said he experienced surveillance and was menaced in the office when he refused to resign. He was eventually forced to leave the company.
