>Earth Overshoot Day 2019
Monday marked Earth Overshoot Day 2019, meaning humans have used up more natural resources than the planet can renew in the entire year.
This year, the day is being marked earlier than ever - and for the first time in July.
The Global Footprint Network, a sustainability organization that tracks the date, explained on its website that the day has gradually come earlier over the years. In the past 20 years, it has moved up about two months.
Having the date occur on July 29 means that in order to sustain human activity in its current form, 1.75 Earths are needed.
"The costs of this global ecological overspending are becoming increasingly evident in the form of deforestation, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, or the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere," the organization said.
>Japan opens e-visa services
Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said on Monday that Japan will offer an online application option for single-entry visas for Chinese group tourists starting July 30.
The minister said the move aims to simplify visa application procedures and improve the efficiency of visa services at Japanese embassies and consulates abroad.
The Japanese Embassy in Beijing will allow some approved travel agencies to use the online service first.
As a general rule, the travel agencies should apply for a group tourist single-entry visa for Chinese travelers to the country for a stay of up to 15 days.
The Japanese consulate in Shanghai will offer the online service at a later date, which will then be available to all individual tourists to Japan.
>Plant trees for gun license
Indian officials have launched a creative new initiative to boost the number of trees in a Punjab state district, requiring all prospective gun owners to plant 10 tree saplings before their application will be considered.
Potential applicants in Ferozepur district will each have to plant 10 saplings and take selfies with them, which they must show to authorities when they go to pick up gun license application forms.
One month later, they need to once again take photographs with the trees to prove they are taking care of them.
Only after this is done will the applicant be "considered" for license approval and background checks.
The scheme was initiated because "a large number of trees are being cut down".
>Illnesses underreported
China has charted 975,000 cases of occupational diseases since records began, but the actual number of employees affected by work-related illnesses is much higher, a senior health official said on Tuesday.
The underreported data is largely due to low rates of health screenings designed to detect conditions arising from workplace activities, as well as flaws in the country's employment system, said Wu Zongzhi, director of the National Health Commission's occupational health department.
About 28,000 new cases of occupational illnesses - with black lung disease accounting for the majority - are diagnosed in the country each year, Wu said.
