>Virtual influencer created
A Japanese technology company that specializes in blending the digital world with our reality has created Japan's first virtual male influencer, Liam Nikuro.
According to 1sec Inc, Liam was created by superimposing an all-CG head made with the use of 3D tools on a body filmed in live action.
So he's technically not all fake, just the head.
According to the character design, Liam is a young heart-throb "from Los Angeles" who reportedly works in some of the coolest and most profitable industries of our time - music, fashion, and entertainment.
The child of a Japanese mother and an American father, Liam currently stands at 180 cm and weighs 72 kg.
Liam only has 8,700 followers on Instagram, so he's not exactly the most successful influencer on the popular social media, but he's definitely a lot more successful than a lot of humans on there. Plus, he's just getting started.
>Berlin freezes rent rises
Berlin's government has moved to freeze rents in the booming German capital for five years from 2020 in their latest bid to halt runaway gentrification.
Once described as "poor, but sexy", Berlin has seen its housing costs double over the last decade as employees lured by the strong job market move into the city.
The sharp rent hikes have led some residents to ponder radical solutions, including pushing for the seizure of housing stock from powerful landlords.
Alarmed by the trend, Berlin's city government agreed on the outlines of a draft law that would include a temporary freeze on rents for five years from 2020, with a bill now to be drafted.
>Surgery clients get younger
Plastic surgery clients are trending younger globally, and doctors and psychologists are pointing to the rise of social media as playing a role.
According to a report in the South China Morning Post, not only is the number of aesthetic plastic surgery cases - including cosmetic procedures like rhinoplasty, facelifts, and lip augmentations - on the rise globally, but the average age of clients also is dropping.
Of the 22 million Chinese who underwent cosmetic procedures in 2018, clients under age 28 accounted for 54% (nearly 12 million) of patients.
Teenagers, meanwhile, accounted for 8% of total procedures.
Doctors, surgeons, and psychiatrists are pointing to selfie-led social media culture as driving the rise of aesthetic surgery among young people.
That's a departure from what surgeons say marked plastic surgery trends of the early aughts, when people brought in pictures of celebrities and models and asked for features to better match them.
>World population prospects
The world's population could swell to 10.9 billion by the end of the century, a new United Nations analysis found, raising concerns that adding more than 3 billion people to the planet could further deplete natural resources and accelerate global warming.
The fastest growth, according to the report, is most likely to occur in sub-Saharan Africa, which is expected to double its population in the next 30 years.
The report also projected that India would become the world's most populous country by about 2027, surpassing China.
The US is estimated to grow from 329 million people in 2019 to 434 million people by the end of the century, with most of that projected increase owing to migration.
