1. have a soft spot for sb
soft spot指的是易受打動(dòng)之點(diǎn),有點(diǎn)“軟肋”的意味。
have a soft spot for sb常指莫名其妙地“十分喜愛(ài)(某人)”。
She'd always had a soft spot for her younger nephew.
她一直很喜歡她的小侄子。
2. ride a wave
△肯尼斯是個(gè)億萬(wàn)富翁,在創(chuàng)業(yè)浪潮中賺了很多錢(qián)。
ride (on) a wave of sth是個(gè)很形象的短語(yǔ),表示“乘…之勢(shì);借…的東風(fēng)”
The new president is riding (on) a wave of popularity.
新總統(tǒng)深得人心,大獲其益。
3. upstage
upstage是“搶…的風(fēng)頭”的意思,再補(bǔ)充兩個(gè)近義表達(dá):
①steal sb's thunder
Sandy stole my thunder when she announced that she was pregnant two days before I'd planned to tell people about my pregnancy.
在我打算告訴大家我懷孕的消息之前兩天,桑迪搶先宣布她懷孕了,搶了我的風(fēng)頭。
②steal the show
Despite fine acting by several well-known stars it was a young newcomer who stole the show.
盡管幾位名角演出都很出色,卻未曾想竟讓一名新秀搶盡風(fēng)頭。
4. put/lay your cards on the table
put/lay your cards on the table?把牌放在桌子上,也就是“攤牌,和盤(pán)托出”的意思。
英語(yǔ)里“攤牌”還可以說(shuō):
①show your hand
Keep the names of the team secret - don't show your hand until the day of the game.
球隊(duì)的名稱(chēng)要保密——比賽那天再宣布。
②tip your hand
Despite weeks of media speculation, the president refused to tip his hand about his plans for re-election.
盡管數(shù)周來(lái)媒體都在猜測(cè),但總統(tǒng)拒絕透露爭(zhēng)取連任的計(jì)劃。
