>Machine connects human brain
Elon Musk has revealed his Neuralink startup is close to announcing the first brain-machine interface to connect humans and computers.
The entrepreneur took to Twitter to tell followers the technology would be "coming soon" – though he failed to provide details.
Neuralink was set up in 2016 with the ambitious goal of developing hardware to enhance the human brain, however, little about how this will work has been made public.
Musk has frequently claimed the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) poses an existential risk to humanity.
Such an interface, he says, is essential if humans are to compete with such technology in the future.
At a technology conference in 2016, Musk said humans risked being treated like house pets by AI machines if a brain-computer interface was not built.
"I don't love the idea of being a house cat, but what's the solution? I think one of the solutions that seems maybe the best is to add an AI layer."
>Shanghai tops in big earners
Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen are the three Chinese mainland cities with the highest proportion of high-income earners, according to a newly released survey.
In Shanghai, 35.09% of respondents earn a monthly salary of more than 10,000 yuan, followed by Beijing and Shenzhen, where 35.07% and 26.91%, respectively, earn the same amount, the survey said. The survey was published jointly by Tencent's wealth management platform Licaitong, Tencent Financial Technology Think Tank and Penguin Intelligence on Tuesday.
Nanjing and Hangzhou rank fourth and fifth, with 19.37% and 18.6%, respectively, of respondents earning 10,000 yuan per month, while Guangzhou comes sixth with 14.74%.
Internet, real estate and finance are the three industries that offer the highest wages, the survey said.
The survey also shows that work experience does not play a vital role in determining one's wage level. Of the respondents with more than 10 years' experience, only 22.44% earn more than 10,000 yuan per month.
>Adobe to kill off Flash
Adobe Systems has said that it plans to phase out its Flash Player plug-in by the end of 2020.
The technology was once one of the most widely used ways for people to watch video clips and play games online.
But it also attracted much criticism, particularly as flaws in its code meant it became a popular way for hackers to infect computers.
In recent years, much of its functionality has been offered by the rival HTML5 technology.
"Flash fulfilled its promise for a while but it never saw the mobile device revolution coming and ultimately that's what killed it," said apps developer Malcolm Barclay.
>'6th extinction' quickens
The sixth mass extinction of life on Earth is unfolding more quickly than feared, scientists have warned.
More than 30% of animals with a backbone - fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals - are declining in both range and population, according to the first comprehensive analysis of these trends.
Around a decade ago, experts feared that a new planetary wipeout of species was looming.
Today, most agree that it is underway, but the new study suggests that it is already ratcheting up a gear.
The 177 mammal species that were monitored have lost at least a third of their original habitat between 1900 and 2015, researchers found.
The loss of biodiversity has recently accelerated. Several species of mammals that were relatively safe one or two decades ago are now endangered, including cheetahs, lions and giraffes, the study showed.
