>Emoji plates to be launched
Drivers in Queensland, Australia, will be allowed to add their favorite emoji to a personalized number plate starting next month. The emojis will cost extra and are only for decoration, rather than car identification. The emoji will be added to the letters and numbers on the plate. The personalized plates have a price point of $340, and some think this is a nifty way for authorities to make more money. The emojis that can be used are also limited: drivers can only pick from five positive faces: "laughing out loud," "winking face," "cool sunglasses," "heart eyes," and "smiley face". Some drivers said they'd consider adding one to their license plate if the full spectrum of emojis was available.
>Call from 'insistent' wife
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker gave everyone a laugh when he answered a phone call in the middle of a press conference from his very insistent wife. Juncker's phone went off a total of three times at the EU-Arab League press conference in Egypt on Monday. As other speakers including the country's president Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and EU Council President Donald Tusk looked on he reached into his suit pocket a couple of times to silence the chirping. But when it went off for a third time he interrupted his speech, saying: "I will stop here because my phone is ringing. I apologize." After saying some hushed words into the handset he prompted laughter as he revealed: "It was the usual suspect - my wife. I have to stop here because she will not stop there."
>Protein to replace plastics
Proteins found in squid can be used to create sustainable alternatives to plastics, according to a report published in Frontiers in Chemistry. Squid grasp their prey using suction cups on their tentacles and arms. The cups are equipped with sharp "ring teeth" that hold the food in place. The teeth are made from proteins that are similar to silk, and these have become the subject of scientific interest in the last few years. Melik Demirel, of Pennsylvania State University, is lead author of the new report, which reviews existing research on materials made from these proteins. He said his team has produced prototypes of fibers, coatings and 3D objects made from the squid ring teeth (SRT) proteins. Demirel said these natural materials are biodegradable - and could provide an "excellent" alternative to plastics. The SRT proteins can be produced in the laboratory using genetically engineered bacteria, which means they don't need to use any squid. The process is based on fermentation, using sugar, water and oxygen.
>DPRK-US summit without deal
Top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump ended their second summit, without a deal, in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi on Thursday. "No agreement was reached" between Kim and Trump in their second summit in Hanoi, according to the White House. It added that the two countries' respective teams looked forward to meeting in the future. Though the two leaders ended their meeting without any agreement, Kim and Trump had "very good and constructive meetings" and discussed various ways to "advance denuclearization and economic driven concepts," the statement from the White House said.
