>Earth is getting greener
India and China are leading the global greening effort, a recent NASA study said, observing that the world is a greener place than it was 20 years ago. Data from NASA Earth satellites shows that human activity in China and India dominate this greening of the planet, thanks to tree planting & agriculture. "That is a surprising finding, considering the general notion of land degradation in populous countries from overexploitation," said lead author Chi Chen of Boston University. China alone accounts for 25% of the global net increase in leaf area with only 6.6% of global vegetated area. The greening in China is from forests (42%) and croplands (32%), but in India, it is mostly from croplands (82%) with minor contribution from forests (4.4%).
>Sailor in kiss photo dies
The US sailor famously photographed kissing a stranger in New York's Times Square to celebrate the end of World War II has died aged 95. The picture of George Mendonsa bending over and kissing 21-year-old Greta Zimmer Friedman on V-J Day (Victory over Japan) became one of the most enduring images of the period. It was one of four photographs taken by Alfred Eisenstadt as a round-up of celebration pictures for "Life" magazine. Eisenstadt did not give the names of the kissing strangers and it was years before Mendonsa and Friedman were confirmed as the featured couple. Mendonsa's daughter said her father suffered a seizure and died after a fall at a care home in Middleton, Rhode Island. Mendonsa died two days before his 96th birthday.
>Princes to split household
The Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex are set to split their household within weeks, The Sunday Times revealed. Princes William and Harry, who have long been the closest of brothers, are expected to part ways formally to create separate courts before the birth of Harry's first child, due in April or May. The division of their shared household after 10 years reflects their increasingly different responsibilities. It is thought courtiers hope a formal separation of their staff may help ease the reported tensions between the brothers and their wives. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will shortly move from Kensington Palace to Frogmore Cottage, on the Windsor estate. A source who knows William and Harry told the Times: "When William becomes the Prince of Wales, he will take on a lot of extra responsibility, including the Duchy of Cornwall. Harry and Meghan have none of that, and seem ambitious about forging their own paths. The brothers have leant on each other and looked after each other since their mother died. But now they have their own families, they no longer rely on each other as before. They have become different people with different outlooks on life."
>Nonprofit cafes close
Panera is closing the last of its nonprofit cafes that let customers pay what they wished nine years after launching the experimental locations. Panera opened its first donation-based community cafe in Clayton, Missouri, in 2010. The model aimed to raise awareness about food insecurity by offering meals at a suggested donation price. "In many ways, this whole experiment is ultimately a test of humanity," Panera founder Ron Shaich said. At the program's peak there were a total of five Panera locations in the US. All eventually closed. The company revealed in 2013 that Panera stores made only 70% to 80% of the revenue that traditional stores did.
