The radar equipment on Chinese icebreaker Xuelong cannot distinguish floating surface ice from an iceberg, which helps explain why the ship slammed into an iceberg in western Antarctica's Amundsen Sea on Saturday, an expert said. The variable weather in the area was another factor, said oceanographer Chen Dake. The vessel was caught in a sudden thick fog and the crew was only able to spot the iceberg at close range. Xuelong is in stable condition now. It sailed out of the iceberg-dense area and resumed its voyage in the early hours of Tuesday, the Ministry of Natural Resources said. Part of the hull was damaged. Other facilities on board, including engines, navigation and the telecommunication systems, were not affected. No injuries were reported, the ministry said. The collision happened on Saturday morning, breaking the ship's mast and leaving about 250 tons of snow and ice on the front deck. It had been traveling at about 5.5 kilometers per hour and retreated immediately after the impact, China Central Television reported.

Major convenience stores in Japan announced on Tuesday that they will stop selling pornographic magazines in an effort to create a "comfortable environment" before the country plays host to international sports events, such as the 2020 Olympics. 7-Eleven Japan Co, Lawson Inc and FamilyMart Co, the top three convenience store chain operators, have all decided to end the sale of adult publications and manga comics by the end of August, citing concerns over harming the country's image before the 2019 Rugby World Cup and next year's Tokyo Olympics. The companies said they hope the decision will create a more welcoming environment for women and children and will avoid giving off a bad impression of the country as Japan prepares for a flood of foreign visitors during the sports events.

"Black Panther" made history as the first superhero film to ever be nominated for best picture. The Marvel mega-hit was joined in that category by "BlacKkKlansman," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "The Favourite," "Green Book," "Roma," "A Star Is Born" and "Vice." Without a clear frontrunner for best picture among popular favorites, or as of yet a host, this year's Oscar ceremony is shaping up to be particularly unpredictable. Observers had been interested in a potential best actress race between Glenn Close for her role in "The Wife" and Lady Gaga for her performance in "A Star Is Born," and they got their wish with Tuesday's announcement. The Oscars will air live Feb 24 on ABC.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced on Wednesday that the country has cut off diplomatic relations with the US, giving American diplomats 72 hours to leave the country. Earlier that day, US President Donald Trump said that the country had recognized Juan Guaido as the Venezuela's "interim president". Trump said that the US would continue to use economic and diplomatic power to press for "the restoration of Venezuelan democracy." Guaido, head of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, declared himself "interim president" of Venezuela earlier Wednesday. Venezuela's incumbent President Maduro was elected last year with 67.84% of the votes, and he was sworn in as president on Jan 10 for another six-year term.
