>Trump fetes fast food feast
US President Donald Trump has put on a fast food feast at the White House, blaming the partial government shutdown for the lack of catering staff. He welcomed the winners of the national college football championship, the Clemson Tigers, with burgers, as well as fries and pizzas. "Because of the shutdown... we went out and we ordered American fast food paid for by me. We have pizzas, we have 300 hamburgers, many, many French fries, all of our favorite foods," Trump said as he hosted the event in the State Dining Room on Monday. When asked to name his own favorite fast food by a reporter, Trump said that he liked them all. "If it's American, I like it. It's all American stuff," he replied.

>Veteran gets 50,000 cards
A 96-year-old World War II veteran from California will be spending plenty of time with family going through a mountain of birthday cards, after a request from his daughter on Facebook went viral. Sue Morse had put out a request for friends to send birthday wishes to her father and Purple Heart medal recipient Duane Sherman, expecting she would get maybe 160 cards. Instead, he received over 50,000. Sherman's wife of 57 years, Lois, died in 2011. The only mail Sherman receives most days are just bills, and he's outlived most of his friends. "I wanted him to feel special on his birthday," Morse said. Ever since Morse put out her plea on Facebook, her father has received birthday cards and notes from all 50 US states and 10 countries. Included in the fan mail are notes from elementary school students and prison inmates. The secretary of the Navy sent one. So did the Pittsburgh Steelers and Ohio State University. Since Sherman is legally blind, Morse has been reading the cards and letters out loud to her dad. She's gotten through about 1,700 letters and plans to enlist the help of friends to get through the rest.
>Avengers to save the Oscars?
The Avengers saved the planet from an alien invasion and an artificial intelligence hellbent on human extinction. Their next assignment: Saving the Academy Awards. The Oscars (Feb 24) were left without a host when comedian Kevin Hart stepped down from the gig following the widespread backlash to his history of making homophobic comments. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is instead scrambling to "reunite" cast members of Marvel's Avengers movies as a rotating team of quasi-hosts to introduce segments and hold the telecast together. It's unclear which Avengers specifically will take part in the show, but the Academy wants "appearances by as many big-name cast members" as possible, the Hollywood Reporter said.
>Brexit deal rejected
British lawmakers defeated Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit divorce deal by a crushing margin on Tuesday, triggering political chaos that could lead to a disorderly exit from the EU or even to a reversal of the 2016 decision to leave. After parliament voted 432-202 against her deal, the worst defeat in modern British history, opposition Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn promptly called a vote of no confidence in May's government, to be held on Wednesday. More than 100 of May's own Conservative lawmakers - both Brexit backers and supporters of EU membership - joined forces to vote down the deal. Several outcomes are now possible following the government's defeat, including the calling of a general election, the prime minister's resignation, and even a second referendum. The UK also now faces the possibility of exiting the EU in late March without a deal in place.
