>Wide face women successful
Scientists have discovered that a hidden indicator of a woman's motivation to dominate lies in the shape of her face - and that women with wider faces are simply more power-hungry. Psychologists at Friedrich-Alexander University in Bavaria, Germany, measured face width and height, and calculated the ratio of the distance between the left and right cheekbones to the distance between the upper lip and brow. They called the measurement the facial width-to-height ratio, or fWHR. Researchers then carried out tests on 213 subjects to measure a psychological phenomenon known as the "implicit need for power", a predisposition that works subconsciously. The results showed links between fWHR and the desire for power - but only in women. Angela Merkel was a "very good example" of someone meeting the criteria and that Margaret Thatcher, the most powerful female politician in British history, also had "broader features", said Kevin Janson, who led the research.
>Banning plastic won't help
An outright ban on plastics could cause even more harm to the environment and lead to triple the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. That's the finding of experts from Herriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, which says that replacing plastic with alternate materials such as metal and glass won't help the environment. The team says this is because the manufacturing of these replacements could double global energy consumption. Resources required to process these replacement materials would lead to more energy consumption and more greenhouse gas.
>Sockless trend fuels foot woes
The trend of wearing shoes without socks is leading to a rise in cases of foot problems, such as athlete's foot, the College of Podiatry in the UK has warned. The "bare ankle" look has filtered down from the catwalk to the most avid followers of fashion, with designers of menswear showcasing their formal attire with sockless models in suits. Some of Hollywood's biggest stars have experimented with the style, including Bradley Cooper, Ryan Gosling, Orlando Bloom and Jude Law. However, podiatrist Emma Stevenson from the College of Podiatry points out that ill-fitting footwear and a lack of socks can lead to issues like blisters and the formation of corns, calluses and ingrown toenails. Thus, the podiatrist offers some advice, including spraying feet with underarm antiperspirant prior to putting your shoes on, giving shoes 48 hours to dry out to prevent bacteria breeding, and washing and drying feet correctly after going sockless.
>Notre Dame needs makeover
Broken gargoyles and fallen balustrades replaced by plastic pipes and wooden planks. Flying buttresses darkened by pollution and eroded by rainwater. Pinnacles propped up by beams and held together with straps. The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, a jewel of medieval Gothic architecture, needs an extensive makeover. Experts say Notre Dame, although not at risk of sudden collapse, has reached a tipping point - and an expensive one at that. To foot the bill - an estimated 150 million euros - they are hoping to capitalize not only on the architectural patriotism of the French, but also on the francophilia of US donors. "There is a real need for urgent restoration work," said Michel Picaud, who heads the newly created Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris foundation, which aims to raise money in the US. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, the cathedral is on many people's to-do lists, including the likes of Melania Trump and Beyonce.
