>Putin calendar a hit in Japan
Russian President Vladimir Putin's calendar, which features the leader nonchalantly lowering himself into the icy waters of Lake Seliger or making short work of weights in the gym, is outselling those featuring homegrown celebrities in Japan. The Loft chainstore, which has exclusive rights over sales of the calendar, reported that those featuring Russia's 66-year-old president were dominating sales at its outlets across Japan. With just two weeks of the year left, Putin's calendars were more popular than those of Japanese actor Kei Tanaka and, in third place, Yuzuru Hanyu, the reigning Olympic men's figure skating champion. Media reports in Japan suggested many of the people buying the calendars, including a large number of women, were drawn to Putin's unconventional style and unashamed machismo.
>Ditch smartphone for $100K
Vitaminwater is issuing a low-tech challenge to smartphone addicts: Ditch your device for a year, and win $100,000. Enter the contest by sharing a post on Twitter or Instagram explaining what you'd do instead of scrolling through social media posts. All legal residents of the US who are 18 or older and own and use a smartphone are eligible to enter, Vitaminwater said, adding that applications will be judged on originality, brand relevance, humor and other factors. People required to use a smartphone for work or other commitments "need not apply," according to the official rules. And no cheating, please: The company will administer a lie detector test to help ensure honesty and adherence to contest rules. The seemingly simple challenge includes reverting to a 1996-era mobile phone for an entire year. No smartphone or tablet use is permitted, even if the device belongs to a friend. Laptops and desktop computers are OK to use, as are voice-activated devices like Google Home or Amazon Echo. The contestant who only lasts six months will receive $10,000.

Chinese internet giant Alibaba on Tuesday opened a hotel loaded with artificial intelligence (AI) and robots, automating a series of procedures like check-in, lights' control and room service. The FlyZoo Hotel opened in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, where Alibaba is headquartered and is known as the company's first "future hotel". Users also can control the lights, television and curtains in the room via Alibaba's voice-activated digital assistant, while robots are deployed to serve dishes, cocktails and coffee. "The AI-based solution can help customers save time and relieve hotel employees from repetitive work," said Wang Qun, CEO of FlyZoo Hotel. "In the future, we will continue to make hotels smarter and more automated, as well as create more customized experiences for consumers," Wang said.

>Women's wages far behind
Women must wait 202 years before they can earn the same as men and have equal job opportunities, according to a global report released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Tuesday. Women earn about half as much as men, said the WEF, reporting a gender pay gap of 51% in 2018. There were fewer women working this year than men, mostly due to the lack of childcare, which kept women from jobs or from progressing to senior roles, according to the annual report. Women were missing at the top, the report found, with only one-third of all managerial roles taken by women.
