The stinky, spiky durian is set to become Malaysia's next major export as the Southeast Asian nation rushes to develop thousands of acres to cash in on unprecedented demand for the fruit from China. Even property tycoons and companies in palm oil, Malaysia's biggest agricultural export, are making forays into the durian business. China's durian imports rose 15% last year to nearly 350,000 tons worth $510 million, according to the United Nations' trade database. Chinese pay top dollar for Malaysia's "Musang King" variety of durian because of its creamy texture and bitter-sweet taste. Prices of the variety, now planted all over the country, have nearly quadrupled in the last five years.

Midfielder Luka Modric, playing for Real Madrid, opened a new chapter in Ballon d'Or (Golden Ball) history as he became the first Croatian to claim the award on Monday. It was the latest recognition for his achievement and contribution throughout the year, following the UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award and the Best FIFA Men's Player. Modric ended the past decade dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the Ballon d'Or, as the two superstars claimed it five times apiece. Modric spearheaded Croatia into the World Cup final for the first time in history in Russia, winning the tournament's Golden Ball himself. On the club side, the playmaker won the third straight UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid. "As a kid we all have dreams. My dream was to play for a big club and win important trophies," the 33-year-old Modric said. "The Ballon d'Or was more than just a dream for me and it is really an honor and a privilege to hold this trophy."

A man accidentally dropped an engagement ring through a Times Square sidewalk grate after proposing to his girlfriend. On Saturday, the New York Police Department put out a Twitter bulletin seeking the woeful groom. "WANTED for dropping his fiancee's ring in Times Square! She said yes - but he was so excited that he dropped the ring in a grate," the NYPD News tweeted Saturday. " ... Officers rescued it & would like to return it to the happy couple." They posted video of the couple that shows the man peering down in to the grate. They also posted multiple photos of the ring. The next day, the NYPD announced that, with the help of social sleuths assisting in the multinational probe, it had found the owners, who are from the UK. "We would like to thank everyone who shared this story!" the department tweeted. "The happy couple is back in their home country, but thanks to your retweets they heard we were looking for them! We're making arrangements to get them their ring back. Congratulations!"

French President Emmanuel Macron is seeking ways to defuse nationwide protests over high living costs that led to widespread rioting in Paris over the weekend. The "yellow vest" revolt caught Macron unawares when it erupted on Nov 17 and poses a formidable challenge to the 40-year-old as he tries to counter a plunge in popularity over his economic reforms, which are seen as favoring the wealthy. Riot police were overrun over the weekend as protesters wrought havoc in Paris's fanciest neighborhoods, torching cars, looting boutiques and smashing up luxury private homes and cafes in the worst disturbances the capital has seen since 1968. More than 100 people were injured and 412 have been arrested. The core demand of the "yellow vest" movement is a freeze on further planned fuel tax increases and measures to bolster spending power. But they have also called for Macron to go. The French government will suspend a fuel tax rise which were due in January, local media reported on Tuesday.
