>Mock jail stay to beat stress
For most people, prison is a place to escape from. For South Koreans in need of a break from the demands of everyday life, a day in a faux jail is the escape. Since 2013, the "Prison Inside Me" facility in northeast Hongcheon has hosted more than 2,000 inmates, many of them stressed office workers and students seeking relief from South Korea's demanding work and academic culture. Prison rules are strict. No talking with other inmates. No mobile phones or clocks. Clients get a blue prison uniform, a yoga mat, tea set, a pen and notebook. They sleep on the floor. There is a small toilet inside the room, but no mirror. Some customers are wary of spending 24 or 48 hours in a prison cell, until they try it, co-founder of the mock prison Noh Ji-Hyang said. "After a stay in the prison, people say, 'This is not a prison, the real prison is where we return to,'" she said.
>SpongeBob creator dies at 57
Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the animated television series "SpongeBob SquarePants," has died at the age of 57, the Nickelodeon television network said on Tuesday. Hillenburg had said last year that he was suffering from the neurodegenerative disease ALS. "We are incredibly saddened by the news that Steve Hillenburg has passed away following a battle with ALS," the network said in a statement. "He was a beloved friend and long-time creative partner to everyone at Nickelodeon, and our hearts go out to his entire family." Hillenburg was a marine biology teacher in Southern California when he started creating sea creatures as teaching tools. The first episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants," featuring the cheery yellow sea sponge and his friends who live in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom, aired on television in May 1999. The series went on to win multiple awards, produced a series of spin-off books, two Hollywood movies and a Broadway musical.
>Misinformation word of 2018
Dictionary.com announced "misinformation" as its word of the year for 2018 on Monday. The word is defined as, "false information that is spread, regardless of whether there is intent to mislead." "The rampant spread of misinformation is really providing new challenges for navigating life in 2018," said Jane Solomon, a linguist-in-residence at Dictionary.com, which is based in Oakland. "Misinformation has been around for a long time, but over the last decade or so the rise of social media has really, really changed how information is shared, she said. "We believe that understanding the concept of misinformation is vital to identifying misinformation as we encounter it in the wild, and that could ultimately help curb its impact," she added.
26日,詞典網(wǎng)站Dictionary.com宣布,其2018年度詞匯是"misinformation(虛假信息)"。 偛课挥诿绹鴬W克蘭的Dictionary.com的常駐語言學家簡?
>Home 'most dangerous place'
More than half the women who were murdered worldwide last year were killed by their partners or family members, making home "the most dangerous place for a woman," a new UN study said. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) calculated that of a total 87,000 female homicide cases worldwide in 2017, some 50,000 - or 58% – were committed by the victims' intimate partners or family members. "This amounts to some six women being killed every hour by people they know," the Vienna-based body said. The vast majority - about 80% - of homicide victims worldwide were men, but "women continue to pay the highest price as a result of gender inequality, discrimination and negative stereotypes," said UNODC chief Yury Fedotov.
