>Top White House aide fired
Mira Ricardel, the White House deputy national security adviser, was forced out of her job on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump's wife, Melania, said Ricardel did not deserve the honor of working for her husband. Ricardel "will continue to support the president as she departs the White House to transition to a new role within the administration," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement. Sanders did not elaborate on what Ricardel's new job would be. It is an extraordinary move that the first lady publicly called for the dismissal of a top White House National Security Council official. The Wall Street Journal reported that the first lady's staff and Ricardel clashed during Melania's visit to Africa in October over such things as seating on the plane and requests to use the council's resources.

>Pink diamond fetches $50M
An unusually large pink diamond sold for a record-breaking $50 million Tuesday at Christie's auction house in Geneva. After five minutes of bidding, the 18.96-carat diamond became the world record holder for price paid per carat for a pink diamond at auction. Christie's international head of jewelry, Rahul Kadakia, said it was purchased by American luxury brand Harry Winston, and will be renamed the Winston Pink Legacy. Pink Legacy is categorized as a "Fancy Vivid" diamond. Only 1 in 100,000 diamonds receives the grading. The diamond is an even rarer find because of its size, as Fancy Vivid Pink diamonds larger than 10 carats are "virtually unheard of," according to Christie's.
>Names easier to remember
You can remember the face, but can't put a name to it. Many of us have been caught in this embarrassing situation. But researchers say it is often easier to remember someone's name than what they look like. 24 volunteers were shown 40 pictures of strangers, paired with random names. They were given time to memorize the faces and names before being tested on which they thought they had seen before. The participants could remember up to 85% of the names but only 73% of the faces, according to the study, led by the University of York. That may be because faces are only recognized visually, while names can be both spoken and written down so appear in our visual and audio memory.
>Deadliest time for suicides
Suicides among middle-aged men in Japan spike on Monday mornings, a new study finds. Researchers from Waseda University in Tokyo and Osaka University say the majority of men between ages 40 and 65 take their own lives before they leave for work. Through an analysis of data on more than 873,000 people who took their own lives in Japan between 1974 and 2014, researchers found days of the week and times of the day people committed suicide varied by sex and age. Men between ages 40 and 65 committed suicide the most between 4 am and 7:59 am on Mondays. Men in that age group were taking their own lives at a higher rate than men and women of other age groups. Daytime suicides among men in the 40-to-65 age group were 1.57 times higher than suicides that occurred at night. Additionally, the number of suicides that took place on Mondays was 1.55 higher than the number on Saturdays. Researchers said that men who were aged 66 and older and women among all age groups mostly committed suicide during the day, with a peak occurring near noon.
