A wariness that has been slowly brewing is turning into a regionwide consensus in Silicon Valley: The benefits of screens as a learning tool are overblown, and the risks for addiction and stunting development seem high. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, said earlier this year that he would not let his nephew join social networks. Bill Gates banned cellphones until his children were teenagers. "On the scale between candy and crack cocaine, it's closer to crack cocaine," Chris Anderson, the former editor of Wired, said of screens. "We thought we could control it. But it's beyond our power to control. This is going straight to the pleasure centers of the developing brain."

The oversized footwear is the latest in the current trend of statement sneakers, and they are certainly a blingy alternative if you're after a bit of sparkle on your "dad" trainers. And Gucci really hasn't held back with the bling. On the label's website they say the shoes feature "crystals set in engraved metal casings, embroidered onto a removable elastic strap that wraps around the shoe. Featuring a mix of metallic leather, mesh and reflective fabric, the accessory is defined by the Gucci patch with the graphic font of SEGA."

American writer and former president of Marvel Comics Stan Lee has died at the age of 95. An attorney for Lee's daughter, J C Lee, said the legendary comic book author who revolutionized the comic world by introducing human frailties in superheroes, such as Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four and The Incredible Hulk, was declared dead Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Lee had experienced several health issues throughout the past year, including a bout of pneumonia, as well as issues with his vision. Lee was also known for his cameo roles in almost all of the Marvel movies, pulling a girl away from falling debris in 2002's "Spider-Man" and serving as an emcee at a strip club in 2016's "Deadpool". In the 2018 box-office hit "Black Panther", he was a casino patron. In 2008, Lee was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the highest government award for creative artists.

A 69-year-old Dutch man has launched a legal battle to change his age. Emile Ratelband wants to shift his birthday from March 11, 1949 to March 11, 1969, comparing the change to identifying as being transgender. "We live in a time when you can change your name and change your gender. Why can't I change my own age?" he said. Ratelband argues he feels discriminated against because of his age, and that it was affecting his employment chances and his success rate on the dating app, Tinder. He also said he would renounce his pension if he switched his birth date. A local court in the eastern city of Arnhem is expected to rule on the case within four weeks. However officials were skeptical about the case, believing there was no legal mechanism allowing a person to change their birth date, local reports said. One of the judges wanted to know what would become of the 20 years that Ratelband wanted to erase. "Who were your parents looking after then? Who was that little boy?" he was quoted as saying.
