>Pipe bombs sent to Democrats
Former US president Barack Obama and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton were among the targets of suspected package bombs delivered to several high-profile Democrats and CNN, which the FBI said it was investigating as an act of terrorism. All of the targets are frequently maligned by right-wing critics. At least eight suspicious parcels were intercepted before reaching any intended recipients, including Obama's attorney general, Eric Holder, former CIA director John Brennan and prominent Democratic Party donor George Soros. None of the packages detonated, and nobody was hurt. But news of the threats heightened tensions in the nation ahead of midterm elections on Nov 6 that will decide whether Democrats can challenge the majorities now held by President Donald Trump's Republicans in Congress.

>AI-painted portrait for sale
Christie's, the auction house that has sold paintings by Picasso and Monet at record prices, is now poised to set another milestone with the first-ever auction of art created by artificial intelligence (AI). The AI-generated "Portrait of Edmond Belamy" depicts a slightly blurry chubby man in a dark frock-coat and white collar, and his off-center position leaves enough white space to show the artist's signature as "min max Ex[log(D(x))] + Ez[log(1-D(G(z)))]". The painting - which will go under the hammer on Thursday in New York - is expected to fetch as much as $10,000. The portrait was created with AI programmed by the Paris-based collective Obvious, which consists of three 25-year-olds. The work up for auction is one of 11 portraits of the fictional Belamy family. Another portrait in the series was sold to Parisian collector Nicolas Laugero-Lassere in February for around $12,000.
>Pay followers for free foods
Social media promotion has become so important nowadays that businesses are offering freebies to anyone with a certain following on popular social networks. Owners of the "This Is Not a Sushibar" restaurant in Milan are well aware of the potential of social networks like Instagram, and they're more than willing to give away some sushi, if it means getting some exposure. At their restaurant, people have the classic payment options – cash or card – plus a novel one, paying in Instagram followers. The idea is pretty simple, the more followers you have, the more you can eat without having to spend a cent. Patrons who have between 1,000 and 5,000 followers will get a free sushi plate. 5,000 to 10,000 followers will get you two free plates, 10,000 to 50,000, four free dishes, 50,000 to 100,000 followers, eight dishes, and people with over 100,000 Instagram followers get a free full lunch or dinner. Just having a lot of followers isn't enough, patrons also have to publish a post on their Instagram account and tag @thisisnotasishibar and include the hashtag #thisisnotasushibar. They will only receive their free sushi after showing the publish post at the counter.
>Iceberg looks like rectangle
Usually when we think of icebergs, we don't imagine perfect geometric shapes. But that's exactly what NASA captured in an image posted on Twitter of an iceberg in what appears to be the shape of a perfect rectangle. The image was captured during a flight for Operation IceBridge, the largest airborne survey of Earth's polar ice. It even has a name: A tabular iceberg, a type of iceberg both broad and flat. "The iceberg's sharp angles and flat surface indicate that it probably recently calved from the ice shelf," according to a statement from NASA.
