Paul Allen, who co-founded Microsoft, died aged 65 from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma on Monday. He had revealed the disease's return only two weeks ago, after previously being treated for it in 2009. His Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said: "I am heartbroken by the passing of one of my oldest and dearest friends... Personal computing would not have existed without him." Allen made his fortune alongside school friend Gates, after they co-founded technology giant Microsoft in 1975. He left the company in 1983 following his first diagnosis of the blood cancer Hodgkin's disease, but recovered to become a successful venture capitalist with his media and communications investment firm, Vulcan, that he set up in 1986. Over the course of his life, Allen donated more than $2 billion to libraries, museums, AIDS research and even the search for extraterrestrial life.

Stephen Hawking's final fear was that DNA manipulation would lead to a master race of superhumans, it has been revealed. The physicist, who died in March aged 76, thought the development could destroy the rest of humanity. His last prediction is revealed in a new book of his collected articles and essays called "Brief Answers to Big Questions". He feared rich people would soon be able to edit their children's DNA to improve attributes like memory and disease immunity. And he said that would pose a crisis for the rest of the world even if politicians tried to outlaw the practice.

>6,019 to get capital hukou
北京公示積分落戶名單
The first round of 6,019 applicants who meet the qualifications for Beijing's household registration system, called hukou in Chinese, was published on Monday for public supervision, according to municipal authorities. Beijing launched its points-based application system for household registration in April this year after three years of investigation and research preparation in advance, a move to meet the demand of non-native Beijing residents to stabilize their living situation in the capital. Beginning Monday, the 124,657 applicants can check their results on the official website to see if they are within the top 6,019. Li Sufang, deputy head of the Beijing Development and Reform Commission, said the number, which was decided to be about 6,000, was discussed thoroughly via the municipal government, and it will not affect Beijing's population control plan.
北京市政府表示，首批獲得落戶北京資格的6019名申請者15日已公示，接受社會監(jiān)督。經過3年的前期調研準備工作，北京今年4月正式實施積分落戶制度。此舉旨在滿足非京籍居民在京穩(wěn)定生活的需求。15日起，124657名申請者可通過官方網站查詢本人積分結果，查看自己是否在積分排名靠前的6019人中。北京市發(fā)改委副主任李素芳表示，經市政府深入探討，落戶規(guī)模確定為約6000人，不會影響北京市人口調控規(guī)劃。
