>Booze can sway your mood
It's the biggest study to ever document how people react to alcohol, mood-wise. Researchers from the UK used data from almost 30,000 people who responded to the Global Drug Survey, a yearly international poll about drug and alcohol habits around the world. They found different types of drinks have significant different effects on your mood. Strong spirits (like vodka, gin, or whiskey) made people feel energized (58% of people), confident (59%) and sexy (42%). But they also had a negative effect, tending to bring out aggression in some people. Negative feelings, such as aggression (30%), restlessness (28%) and tearfulness (22%), give significant cause for concern. Meanwhile, just 2.5% of red wine drinkers reported feeling more aggressive. Red wine tended to make people sad in 17% of cases, but more significantly, 53% of red wine drinkers said it left them feeling more relaxed. A similar fraction of people (almost 50%) reported this sentiment for beer.
>Shorts cost as much as trousers
In general, a pair of shorts isn't any cheaper than a pair of trousers, despite one obviously using less fabric than the other. So what gives? Extra material does go into a full pair of trousers but not as much as you may think. As Esquire explains, shorts that don't fall past your knees may contain just 1/5 less fabric than ankle-length trousers. This is because most of the cloth in these items is sewn into the top half. Those same details that end up accounting for most of the material - flies, pockets, belt loops, waist bands - also require the most human labor to make. This is where the true cost of a garment is determined.
>Smokers are less attractive
A latest survey shows that smoking actually makes you less attractive to the opposite sex. Wrinkles from puffing on a cigarette may be to blame for people judging non-smokers to be better-looking. Nicotine causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the outermost layers of the skin, while the chemicals in tobacco smoke damage collagen and elastin, fibers which give the skin its elasticity. The wrinkles this causes are added to by facial expressions made when smoking - such as pursing the lips when inhaling or squinting to keep smoke out of your eyes, according to researchers.
>Web literature readers grow
The number of China's online literature readers has increased to 406 million this year, almost half of the country's total online population, according to a new industry report. By the end of 2017, there were 16.47 million online literature works, with non-fiction accounting for 52.5%, according to the report released by the China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association. About 14 million people have become registered writers on online literature websites or mobile applications last year, and 51.2% of them can earn more than 5,000 yuan a month, according to the report. China's booming online literature industry has also attracted foreign writers. Yang Chen, general manager for content operation with China Literature Ltd, a leading online reading platform in China, said more than 2,000 writers based overseas published 4,000 online literature works on its websites and mobile apps.
