Polish President Andrzej Duda appealed to the US President Donald Trump's well known affection for slapping his name on buildings as he pitched a permanent US military base in his country that he said would be named "Fort Trump". Trump raised his eyebrow at the idea but didn't rule it out. Trump then hailed Poland's offer to pay $2 billion toward US costs, even as he blasted other unnamed "immensely wealthy" countries the US effectively pays to defend. "When we're defending immensely wealthy countries and they're not paying for the defense to the US they're only taking advantage of us," Trump said, resurrecting a harangue about Germany and other NATO allies who fall short of defense spending pledges.

Scientists have simulated the strongest known material in the universe. So-called "nuclear pasta" is the material at the heart of a neutron star's crust, taking the form of extremely dense structures that take on shapes resembling different types of pasta, such as lasagna and spaghetti. Using a supercomputer to run simulations requiring 2 million hours' worth of processor time, researchers have unraveled, for the first time, the ways in which neutron star crusts break. Researchers from Indiana University and the California Institute of Technology say the new simulations could help us better understand major astrophysical phenomena, such as gravitational waves.

A young boy has been arrested in New South Wales, Australia, after he admitted to inserting sewing needles in strawberries and said it was just a prank, as police continue to investigate at least 20 other instances of food tampering across the state in a crisis that has rocked the country's agriculture sector. Since last week, Australians in every state have reported finding needles concealed in strawberry punnets. Australian police say sewing needles have been found hidden in an apple and a banana. Health Minister Greg Hunt has called it a "vicious crime".

>'Golden eggs' to cure cancer

Japanese scientists have created hens that can lay multi-million pound "golden eggs" containing an expensive protein used to treat serious diseases such as cancer and hepatitis. The creation of the so-called "golden eggs" was masterminded by scientists at Japan's Biomedical Research Institute at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. The new technology involved scientists using new genome editing technology to create hens that can produce eggs containing high quantities of the protein human interferon (干擾素) beta at a low cost. The protein quantity in individual eggs ranged from 30 to 60 milligrams, resulting in each egg reportedly being valued as worth between around 408,000 and 2 million pounds a piece. Human interferon beta is a natural anti-viral protein with a hefty price tag which is commonly used as a therapeutic agent for diseases such as cancer and hepatitis. Scientists are currently collaborating with Cosmo Bio, a Japanese reagent maker, to explore the potential commercial production of the hen-based protein.
