>Girlish male stars stir debate
A heated debate on China's new feminine-looking male celebrities has flooded Chinese social media platform Sina Weibo, as the country's State broadcaster aired four young male singers in its television special "First Class of the New Semester" on Sept 1. Designed for China's elementary school students, the TV special jointly produced by China Central Television and the Ministry of Education is compulsory for most of the country's elementary students. Angry parents harshly criticized the youthful celebrities, deriding them with terms like "pretty girls that cannot have babies", and called on authorities to ban the effeminate stars before the next generation adopts their example. Mr Feng, father of a 5-year-old boy, said that he is worried that his son will behave in a feminine way in school under the influence of these stars. On the other hand, some voices are urging society to respect people's rights to be as feminine or masculine as they choose. "It is important to stay true to your heart," said a mother of a 4-year-old boy, adding, "I will give my son all my support as long as he chooses a path he likes."
>'Fear' posts strong sales
Bob Woodward's book "Fear: Trump in the White House", which officially came out on Tuesday in both hardcover and e-book form, is already one of the biggest publishing success stories of the year. Thanks to a week of sustained news coverage and presidential condemnations after excerpts from the book leaked out last Tuesday, "Fear" has firmly established itself as a hit. The publisher, Simon & Schuster, said Monday that it is printing 1 million copies of the book to keep up with reader demand. "Fear" is already the sixth biggest seller of 2018 on Amazon. The only other Trump-related titles that are higher on the list are James Comey's "A Higher Loyalty" at No 5, and Michael Wolff's "Fire and Fury" at No 1.

>Apple's new iPhone lineup
Apple Inc introduced three new iPhones on Wednesday - the Xs, Xs Max, and XR. The Xs is the successor to last year's iPhone X, and the awkwardly named Xs Max is a larger version of the Xs. The company also introduced the colorful iPhone XR, which will be a slightly more affordable model. The Xs and the Xs Max both have 4 GB of memory, and up to 512 GB of storage onboard, which should be more than enough for even the most voracious shutterbugs and largest music libraries. The phones will start at $999 and $1,099 respectively, and be available for preorder Sept 14 and in stores Sept 21.
>Credits for student volunteers
Two years after announcing strict volunteer requirements for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and realizing they could not get enough help for free, the Japanese organizing committee has instead turned to universities and their vast human resources. In the latest move to entice students to volunteer for the Olympics, a large number of universities have begun to offer academic credits as a form of remuneration. According to broadcasting corporation NHK's survey, 49% of universities in Tokyo are now considering that option. The move raises the question of what it means to volunteer. "Volunteering is essentially willing participation, as disaster volunteers and Olympic volunteers are inherently different. It's unacceptable that institutions are enticing university students with promises of academic credit," Masayuki Kobayashi, a professor at the Center for Research and Development of Higher Education in the University of Tokyo, said.
