>Moms want August babies
Chinese media have noticed a trend of pregnant women rushing to have caesarean sections before the end of August, so that their yet-to-be-born children will be in the academic year ahead of September-born babies. China News Service has released a video featuring a "busy scene" of pregnant women at a hospital in the city of Wuhan. The video has prompted an online debate about Chinese parents' attitude towards education. Some said striving to have a child before September leaves parents feeling they have "won time" regarding their child's education. But most said the trend is "crazy" and shows the way in which Chinese parents are putting too much pressure on their children.
>Man gets royal treatment
Arthur Birch, a former parking inspector from western Sydney, was organizing a flight from the Nigerian capital Abuja to the nation's Lagos. He claimed to have "on purpose" given himself the title prefix HRH for His Royal Highness when making the booking. The simple trick worked and resulted in "the royal treatment". "The Australian High Commission arranged for me to be picked up from my hotel in Abuja to be transported back to the airport in a fully armored high security vehicle with an armed escort and even my luggage was protected,' Birch wrote online. He attached the photos taken with the armed guard and his boarding pass to his Facebook to prove he wasn't lying.
>Rio museum burned out
Rio de Janeiro firefighters on Monday battled and brought under control a devastating fire that broke out Sunday night at Brazil's prestigious National Museum. Despite their efforts, little remains of the more than 20 million artifacts in the collection of the 200-year-old museum, which is also the country's oldest scientific institution. "What survived? The building and several pieces, almost 10%," Cristiana Serejo, a museum deputy director, said at a press conference. The cause of the fire is unknown. In recent years, the museum saw cutbacks in funding that led to several exhibits being closed due to the poor state of the building. In 2018, the museum has received only 10% of the needed maintenance budget, according to local media reports. A renovation project, including fire prevention and mitigation measures, was reportedly postponed because of Brazil's electoral law, which restricts spending during an election period.
>Palace starts renovation
The Palace Museum starts official renovation on Yangxin Dian, or the Hall of Mental Cultivation, in the Forbidden City Monday, a building where emperors of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) resided and handled state affairs. The palace had been closed two years and eight months before the official renovation started. According to museum curator Shan Jixiang, during this period the museum had conducted systematic training with 275 craftsmen, covering detailed skills for ancient architecture construction and traditional repair techniques. 116 craftsmen passed the selection test, and serve as the main force for the renovation of Yangxin Dian. It is scheduled to finish in 2020 when the Forbidden City welcomes its 600th birthday.
