>Night at Great Wall halted
US home-sharing platform Airbnb has suspended a plan to provide lodging on the Badaling Great Wall in Beijing amid concerns that it could damage the ancient structure. The company said on Tuesday that it will not move forward with the original plan out of respect for public opinion, though the event, known as Night at the Great Wall, had been given a nod by relevant parties. But the cultural commission in Beijing's Yanqing district released a statement on Monday saying it was not aware of the event and no approval had been given. The commission said it does not support such activities as they don't help conserve cultural heritage.
>Selfies affect body image
With the spread of photo-editing technology through applications like Snapchat and Facetune, the physical "perfection" previously seen only on celebrity or beauty magazines is now all over social media. As these images become the norm, people's perceptions of beauty worldwide are changing, which can take a toll on a person's self-esteem and can trigger body dysmorphic disorder, argue Boston Medical Center researchers. Research has shown 55% of plastic surgeons report seeing patients who want to improve their appearance in selfies. "A new phenomenon called 'Snapchat dysmorphia' has popped up," said Neelam Vashi, director of the Ethnic Skin Center at BMC, "where patients are seeking out surgery to help them appear like the filtered versions of themselves." However, surgery is not the best course of action in these cases, but psychological interventions.
>Fly ends domino attempt
A German domino entertainment group attempted to break its own 2013 Guinness World Record and recruited 22 people to fit 596,229 mini dominoes with tweezers. But a fly landed on the one of the tiny tiles and triggered a chain reaction before they had completed the set-up. Patrick Sinner of Sinners Domino Entertainment said: "The fly triggered the chain reaction prematurely. There was no time to set up all the little tiles again." The tiles were no bigger than a fingernail and took two weeks to set up. They also managed to break four other world records, including the longest domino chain reaction, which took 15 minutes to complete.
>NY sign spat risks road fund
The big, blue "I Love NY" signs lined up in groups of five along highways and roads from Long Island to Buffalo, New York are hard to miss. The 500-plus tourism signs are at the center of a years-long standoff between the Federal Highway Administration and Democratic Gov Andrew Cuomo. The agency says the signs don't meet regulations and pose a potential distraction to drivers traveling at high speeds, and it has demanded that the state remove them by Sept 30 or lose $14 million in federal highway funding. New York's transportation department, however, has said there's no evidence the signs have directly contributed to any accidents. Cuomo has defended the signs, once calling them "a great, great success for this state." He considers them a key component in spurring the state's tourism industry.
