>Men use parasol to beat heat
日本男用陽(yáng)傘銷量驟增
Parasols - normally regarded as a means of protection against the sun used by women - are proving to be increasingly popular with men in Japan, as heat waves continue to grip the nation. The Environment Ministry released the results of a survey in 2011 which showed the combination of parasols and casual-wear can reduce heat stress by about 20%, but said it would be necessary to spread the idea among men. This summer sales of parasols for men have been rapidly rising. Parasol sales in June and July at the men's store of Isetan Shinjuku in Tokyo more than doubled from a year earlier. According to the store, many of the female customers said they are being asked to buy parasols by their husbands. "I'm guessing that the severe heat wave has removed men's resistance to using parasols," a store official said. "I was hesitant at first because not many men were using them," said Noriaki Fukuhara, 51, who recently made his debut as a parasol man. He said that since he started using one, "a pleasant world has opened up for me." (See photo)

Plane passengers who are not able to comfortably fit in a single seat or don't want to be bothered by people sitting next to them now have a chance to purchase extra tickets when taking the Kunming-based Lucky Air. The company said the move is to satisfy customer demands for more space and privacy during their flights, as well as the needs of those who have valuable luggage with them, but are reluctant to put it in the overhead rack. As for concerns about imposing on the rights of other passengers to purchase tickets, the company says this is not going to be an issue. "The tickets are only available for sale within 24 to 72 hours before the flight takes off with passenger loads of less than 70%," said Chen Mingqiong, Lucky Air's chief marketing officer. "Allowing extra seat booking achieves a win-win situation by using idle resources and meeting the diversified needs of customers," Zou Jianjun, professor at Civil Aviation Management Institute of China, said.

Some experts believe previous laws that doctors must seek the approval of a court to remove sustenance from a patient have resulted in individuals spending longer on life support in a vegetative state than was necessary. The ruling could have an impact on the thousands of families whose loved ones are in a vegetative state. There are about 24,000 people in Britain in a "persistent vegetative" or "minimally conscious" state.

Rack up enough points and you'll be able to redeem gift cards and discounts for retailers like Amazon, Starbucks and Whole Foods, to name a few. The app is designed to encourage eco-friendly travel, so the amount of reward miles, or points, you earn depends on your mode of transport. One mile in a car translates to one mile earned through the app, but a ride in an Uber or Lyft will get you double the points. Public transportation yields three points per mile, biking is five points per mile, and walking is 10 points per mile.
